IEEE Richland Section Power and Energy Society Chapter Seminar:

Smart Grid:  Transforming the Electric System

Date: Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Time: 5:30 – 7:00 pm (Pizza and soft drinks will be provided.)
Location: WSU Tri-Cities Campus West Building 248
Directions: http://www.tricity.wsu.edu/student-affairs/visit.htm

Presenter: Steve Widergren, Staff Engineer, Energy Technology Development Group in PNNL, Richland, WA

Description - The productivity gains and new services from the use of information networks surround our life experiences.  Businesses and facilities continue to enhance their internal operation and push toward more seamless interactions with their customers and other organizations.  The shift that makes this possible is changing the shape of our businesses and personal lives, and it offers a transformation in the way we create, deliver, consume, and manage electricity.  Smart Grid is a vision for a transformation of the electric system.  This talk discusses smart grid concepts and capabilities.  It describes the status of smart grid deployments and highlights the importance of interoperability to flexibly connect electricity assets from wind generators to electric vehicles to buildings and clothes dryers, to enable effective coordination of electricity.

Biography – Mr. Steve Widergren contributes to new solutions for reliable operation of electric power systems. Common throughout his career is the application of information technology to power engineering problems including, simulation, control, and system integration.  He is a principal engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and on assignment to the US Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability as Smart Grid Interoperability and Standards Coordinator.  He was recently Administrator for the GridWise Architecture Council – a group formed to enable interoperability of automated systems related to the electric system.  Prior to joining the Laboratory, he engineered and managed energy management systems products for electric power operations and supported power system computer applications in both supplier and utilities sectors.  Application areas include information modeling, SCADA systems, and power system reliability assessment tools.  Mr. Widergren received his BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.  He is actively involved in the IEEE Power Engineering Society and participates in standards efforts that bridge power engineering with information technology.
