Topic: Increasing Security and Protection of SCADA Systems through Infrastructure Resilience

Date:  Friday, November 13
Time:  11:00a to 12:00p
Location:  PNNL EMSL/1077

Presenter: Professors Salvatore D’Antonio and Luigi Romano
Department for Technology of the University of Naples "Parthenope" in Italy

Description - Systems that manage and control infrastructures over large geographically distributed areas are typically referred to as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The talk aims at presenting the approach we have taken in the INSPIRE (INcreasing Security and Protection through Infrastructure REsilience) project to improve the protection of critical information infrastructures. The core idea of the INSPIRE project is to protect Critical Information Infrastructures (CIIs) by appropriately configuring, managing, and securing the communication network infrastructure which interconnects SCADA systems, the key building blocks of CIIs. In order to do so, a self-reconfigurable architecture has been designed, which provides mechanisms for detecting, diagnosing, and treating faults and attacks which might compromise the correct operation of a Critical Infrastructure.

Biography - Prof. Salvatore D'Antonio is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department for Technology of the University of Naples "Parthenope", in Italy. His current research interests include network monitoring and management, intrusion detection systems, and information system security. He is currently Technical Coordinator of the INTERSECTION project and Project Coordinator of the INSPIRE project.

Prof. Luigi Romano is currently an Associate Professor at the Department for Technology of the University of Naples "Parthenope", in Italy. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer and Systems Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II from 2000 to 2005. His general research area is system dependability and security.
