Topic: ANS-EWS and IEEE Richland Section Joint November 17, 2009 Meeting features a recent control system upgrade to the Columbia Generating Station, a “Tricon Turbomachinery Control System for Integrated Turbine Protection and Reactor Pressure Control”. The ANS-EWS and IEEE Richland Section features Graydon Strong, Electrical/I&C Design Supervisor at the Energy Northwest. Mr. Strong will present the new digital control system which replaces older technology controls resulting in significant improvements in reliability for the 1150 Megawatt Boiling Water Reactor. Invensys Process Systems completed the fast-track controls upgrade with support from Sargent & Lundy. In approximately 10 months the system was installed in the simulator to support two cycles of operator training and six months later was operating with precision. The Tricon TMR system is also utilized for an all new turbine trip digital control scheme, including lube oil, thrust, vacuum and overspeed. The Tricon systems bring together more than 600 critical monitoring and control system I/O points from the turbine and generator. This must be quite an upgrade from the technology is replaces. Could it be that the original design precedes Mr. Strong?
