Abstract
VoLTE or VoIP over LTE – Who Is the Ultimate Winner?
VoIP has been in
existence for more than a decade now. While it
delivers toll- voice quality as expected in certain
areas, it lags far behind in meeting user
expectations elsewhere such as dynamically changing
wireless environments.
Over-The-Top clients have
been delivering V.VoIP functionality over Wired
DSL/cable since mid-90s and then over wireless
WiFi/3G data networks since mid-2000s; they now also
support VoIP over 4G/LTE mobile broadband networks.
While mobile operators use circuit-switched for
voice, with 4G LTE they have taken the VoLTE plunge,
thus challenging OTT clients to deliver superior
real-time video and voice. But who is the ultimate
winner?
