Advances in High Power and High Brightness Laser Diodes and Arrays

Dr. Jeffrey Ungar, President, CEO, QPC Lasers Inc., Sylmar CA
April 03, 2008

The IEEE San Fernando Valley Section held its Special Speakers Series presentation for April 03, 2008, titled "Advances in High Power and High Brightness Laser Diodes and Arrays" presented by Mr. Jeffrey Ungar, at the Faculty Club at the Orange Grove, California State University at Northridge.  Jeffrey Unger was introduced by , Chair person, SFV LEOS Chapter (seen in photo to left).

High power semiconductor laser diodes are unmatched by any other lasers with regard to efficiency, compactness and low cost.  Diodes have not generally been sufficiently bright for many important applications, but recent developments are beginning to change this situation.  We will review some recent advances in the technology of high power diodes and arrays at wavelengths from 0.6 to 2.0 microns and some relevant applications.

Jeff Ungar founded QPC Lasers after a 17 year career at Ortel Corporation, a pioneer in the development of analog fiberoptic technology for CATV. He joined that company in 1983 as one of the first five employees, and stayed at Ortel until after its sale to Lucent Technologies in 2000.

At Ortel, he occupied positions including Director of Advanced R&D for Optoelectronic Components and Director of Material and Structure Technologies.  He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Caltech.
