Subject: IEEE-USA Action Alert - Patent Reform

Late last year the House of Representatives passed a deeply flawed Patent Reform bill.  Among other things, the bill would:

* Drastically limit the damages inventors could recover from infringements of their patents.
* Allow third parties to challenge patent applications before patens are issued.
* Allow patent holders to receive patents on weak applications, and then file additional information if they are challenged.

Thanks in part to strong grassroots support, IEEE-USA and a coalition of over 600 companies and associations convinced the Senate to delay voting on the bill until this year.

But now it is back.  The Senate distributed a new version of the bill in late january.  While some parts of the bill were better, most of the most fundamental flaws from the House bill remain.  IEEE-USA needs help from you again urging the Senate to reconsider its approach to Patent reform.

Please visit IEEE-USA Legislative Action Center at www.ieeeusa.org/policy/lac to see our updated Patent Reform Action Alert.  The Alert will give you more details about the bill and allow you to quickly email your Senators to express your opinion on it.  There is a sample letter provided for your convince.  IEEE-USA urges you to use it as a guide, but to rewrite it in your own words.

Thank you for your help.  Congress is uniquely receptive to letters from their constituents on this issue because very few members of Congress understand intellectual property law very well.  A few letters from thoughtful engineers will go a long way towards convincing Congress to rethink this bill.
