November 19th Professional Licensure Presentation and DiscussionPDF Version Here http://ewh.ieee.org/r6/utah/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=89&Itemid=36 7:00PM on Thursday, November 19th in Room 2250 of the Warnock Engineering Building at the University of Utah Section Professional Activities (PACE) and the GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade) are offering a presentation on the pros and cons of Professional Licensing for section members. Many individuals advocate the licensing of all engineers and others see no need for regulation. Recently a professional license exam for software engineers has also been approved by IEEE and others. This exam is currently being created in preparation for implementation in two or three years and will be similar in scope to the conventional PE (Professional Engineer) exam taken by other professions besides many electrical power engineers. Do you believe hardware and software engineers must/ought to be/shouldn’t be licensed? How can you tell if you don’t understand the changes in your profession licensure would bring? How would it affect you personally? Should you prepare for the exams? At 7:00PM on Thursday, November 19th in Room 2250 of the Warnock Engineering Building at the University of Utah we will have a presentation by Douglas L. Datwyler PE which is designed to provide answers to these and other questions. Douglas sits on the Utah Society of Professional Engineers Board which represents the NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) and is the board’s only Electrical or Electronics Engineer. This organization does not set state policies in engineering, but has been an active advocate for professional licensure. Douglas’s background includes many electronic hardware and computer design projects working for Evans and Sutherland and several other companies over many years. He has dealt with gigabit Ethernet in firewalls, switching and routing, and other hardware/software systems such as 802.15.4 and Zigbee. He has been involved in regulatory requirements for products exported to several countries and can tell us how professional engineering operates in these countries. He is also an Amateur Extra Class License holder, and heavily involved in the Boy Scouts where he has been awarded a Silver Beaver. We will have refreshments prior to the 7:00PM meeting available, and time after Douglas approximately 45 minute presentation for additional questions and comments from other PEs present. We hope to see you there as licensure may greatly impact your future. Please RSVP before November 19th either to Gordon Young (PACE) at <
