IEEE UTAH SECTION NEWSLETTER November 2002 IN THIS ISSUE. . . CALENDAR OF EVENTS NOVEMBER MEETING FALL PICNIC REPORT ENGINEER AND EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR NEWSLETTER LISTSERV CALENDAR OF EVENTS* NOVEMBER 6TH - IOMEGA November Meeting Wednesday, November 6th, 2002 6:30pm, Bldg 8, Training Room Iomega 1900 West 4125 South Roy, UT 84067 Speaker: Darren G. Moss Topic: The Almighty Bit Bucket Overview: Ever wonder what you hard disk does to your data or just how it is stored on the disk? This presentation is an overview of modern magnetic recording technology. Recording basics such as physical layout of magnetic media, write-read head design, and data integrity are considered. A precise combination of these technologies, plus a little finesse, is what has given the hard disk industry a phenomenal annual increase in disk capacity of 100% in recent years. Can the humongous single-drive capacities continue to double on an annual basis? Technologies currently being developed, such as perpendicular recording media and dual-stage actuators, may provide the answer. Darren G. Moss is a firmware design engineer with Iomega Corp. and received the BS in Computer Engineering from Utah State University. Driving directions: [NOTE: Roy's addressing grid is an extension of the Ogden address grid. The following addresses are in Roy.] From the south: Take I-15 north to Roy (Exit 341). At the light at the end of the off ramp, turn left (west) onto 5600 S. Go under the freeway, then about a block to the next light. Turn right (north) on 1900 W (SR-126). Go 1.7 miles to 4125 S., where you'll see a large placard reading "Wasatch Executive Park" on the northwest corner. Turn left (west) onto 4125 S. Go about 50 yards and turn right (north) into the parking lot. Building R8 is north of the parking lot. Enter thru the south door. From the north: Take I-15 south to the Ogden 31st St/Hinckley Dr exit, west bound (#344B). The off ramp will put you on Hinckley Dr going west. Continue west for 1.6 miles, where the road T's at 1900 W (SR-126). Turn left (south) onto 1900 W. Go 0.5 miles to 4125 S. See "from south" directions, beginning at 4125 S. (except turn right). Fall Picnic Report - By Scott Carter The Fall Family Picnic was another resounding success! The people who came enjoyed it. One person confided that his reason for coming was the pulled pork, and it was worth the trip. 54 people came, which is a 17% increase over last year. The food was great, and we had PLENTY of it. We ate about 2/3 of it and sent the rest home with whoever wanted to take it. The park turned out to be an unexpected big hit -- not just a plain old city park. Highland Glen was like being in the mountains. A personal story: my youngest daughter (9) did NOT want to go to a "boring picnic". But I took her anyway. As soon as we got there, she had to go see the "lake". She discovered that there were "little fishies" in the pond and various critters (frogs, lizards, etc) around the pond, and I couldn't pry her away to leave, much less to eat. Sunday morning she asked "Can we go back to that park today, Dad?" If you came, I'm sure you were glad. If you didn't make it this year, stay tuned for next year's picnic. A warm thank you goes to all who helped make this activity successful. Call for Nominations!!! Engineer and Educator of the Year The Utah Section of the IEEE is soliciting nominations for selection and submission to the Utah Engineers Council (UEC) for the annual Engineer and Engineering Educator of the Year 2003 awards. These awards will be made during the UEC's E-Week Banquet, February 20, 2003. Nominations are also being taken for the National Engineer Week 2003 New Faces of Engineering Award. If you have questions or would like to submit your nomination or would like to nominate someone you know in the IEEE, please contact Paul C. Oestreich, (801) 566-6633, Oestreich@TNW.com Newsletter Listserv We have set up a listserv with IEEE to distribute information about upcoming events. Once you subscribe to this list, you will receive the newsletter via e-mail (you can unsubscribe at any time by using "unsubscribe" instead of "subscribe" the example below). To subscribe, the directions are as follows: Send an e-mail to majordomo@majordomo.ieee.org with the following in the body of the message: subscribe utah-section <your email address> You will also continue to receive the newsletter by regular mail. This list will also be used to inform members of short notice upcoming events and other IEEE correspondence that has traditionally just been posted on our web site.
