Awards Banquet Report

IEEE Utah Section - Fall Family Picnic

Roy UT, adjacent to Hill AFB.

Saturday, 18 September 2004

Lunch Time: 12:30 pm

RESERVATION REQUIRED by noon on September 16th (details below)

(Address and driving details provided with reservation confirmation)

Museum tours at your leisure

Bring the kids (but not the neighbors) and come enjoy an awesome (nearly

free!) lunch catered by Famous Dave's barbeque (see menu on back). Visit

with fellow IEEE members and tour the Hill AFB Aerospace and Roy Historical

Museums.

Besides a great lunch and visit, there's an optional sideshow: we've timed

and located the event to take advantage of the annual "open aircraft"/"food

for life" day at the Hill AFB Aerospace Museum. Some of you may remember

that we had a similar plan three years ago, but between the time we sent

out the newsletter, and the date of the event, 9/11 happened. We had to go

ahead with the picnic, but the Aerospace Museum was closed. We hope to have

better luck this year!

The museum exhibits over 70 military aircraft, missiles, and aerospace

vehicles (some indoors, some out), as well as various and sundry military

artifacts, trinkets, and memorabilia. There's an on-site gift shop too.

Normally, admission to the museum is free (with voluntary donations

gratefully accepted), but open aircraft day is used as a fundraiser for

local food banks. So bring "one item of non-perishable food (preferably

canned)" per visitor.

In return, some of the aircraft are opened up (cockpit and/or payload area).

Visitors can view, and in many cases, enter the inside of those planes (if

you're willing to wait in line long enough, you may get to sit in the

cockpit of an F-16). Also, there are a few extra tour guides on hand

(including some old vets who used to fly these birds), to tell stories,

give info, and supervise (suspect we'll also see a few extra security

police around). This will be a memorable experience for young and "old"

alike. The museum will be open from 9:00am until 4:30pm, so you can visit

there before or after lunch. There's a pedestrian gate connecting the

picnic area (off base) to the museum grounds (on base), making for

convenient park-once-and-walk access (as long as you're not outside the

~10:00-5:00 picnic area open hours!). For more info on the museum,

including a list of open aircraft, see http://www.hill.af.mil/museum. Some

of you may also wish to visit the small Roy historical museum, which is

adjacent to the picnic area (free, but donations accepted).

It may not be obvious to the casual observer, but the picnic area is NOT a

park or playground - the owners consider it a "gardens" area, sometimes

used for weddings and such. Please instruct and supervise your children

accordingly (you can smell, but please don't pick the flowers; and the

rocks really don't want to go for a swim in the pond).

RSVP Required (so we can order enough food)

RSVP at your earliest convenience, but before noon on Thu Sept 16*. Send an

email to Scott Carter at s.e.carter@ieee.org (ONLY if you have no email,

call 801-825-1179). Provide the following info: your name and IEEE member

number; number of persons in your party (by age group); if using phone,

return phone number.

(* - I may be able to accept a limited number of reservations after the

deadline [send email AND call]. But don't press your luck unless it's a

necessity!)

officers, a ballot vote is not necessary.

Awards Banquet Report

We want to thank all who attended the annual Awards Banquet at Tuscany June

12th. The section would especially like to thank Scott Carter and all

those who made preparations for this event. There are too many to list

here, but you know who you are. Thanks again for your work and

contributions in helping make the awards banquet such a tremendous success.

This event was attended by 75 people and was the best-attended section

activity with the exception of the Conference Center tour a few years ago.

If you did not attend, you missed a great evening and good food. Plan on

attending next year.
