Success Stories - the Impact of IEEE Canadian Foundation Special Grants
|
|
|
|
Success Stories tell some of the achievements of our Canadian
engineering students - encouraged and assisted by the support provided by
IEEE student services, the IEEE Canada student activities committee, the
IEEE Canadian Foundation, and donors who make the difference by providing
that extra capability.
2011 UBC & SFU Students Field Trip to Germany
During a twelve day trip to Germany in May 2011, 17 University of British
Columbia (UBC) and four Simon Fraser University (SFU) undergraduate and
graduate students visited companies and universities near Dusseldorf,
Cologne, Ladenburg, Berlin, and Munich.
2010 A New McNaughton Centre at UBC Okanagan Campus
Third year UBC student Emily Landry secures funding for a new IEEE McNaughton
Learning Resource Centre at the new (2005) UBC Okanagan campus. This is a story
of an exceptional young engineering student.
2010 Innovative Technology for the Betterment of Humanity
An IEEE Canadian Foundation Humanitarian grant enables U Calgary students
to develop and run a design-based competetion to develop skills to apply
technology towards global welfare.
2010 Traveling to a Conference in Shanghai
An IEEE Canada VT travel grant is critical in enabling a UWO student to
present his paper at the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control.
2009 All Saints High School Robotics Team
An IEEE Canadian Foundation Special Grant enables an Ottawa area High
School to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competetion in Toronto. While initially
having no IEEE connection, this sucess and a smaller subsequent grant in 2010
generated a connection with the local IEEE Section.
2009 Carleton University's IEEE Connects
Expanding a successful venture at Carleton to three schools
during very difficult economic times and making it another success.
2008 University of New Brunswick's Robotics Competition
In 12 hours entrants must build a robot to perform a specific task -
developing quick thinking and teamwork.
2007 Univ of Saskatchewan's Space Design Team
- highlighted on home page
A multidisciplinary team from the U of Saskatchewan wins first place in
NASA's 2010 space elevator competition.
2006 Carleton University's IEEE Connects
Students organize a very sucessful dinner event to bridge the gap between
students and industry.
2005 Laval University's Robocup
These undergraduates enter a soccer contest for robots held in Atlanta,
Georgia and were awarded third place.
2004 Winnipeg Section WIE Rosie
the Robot
Rosie was constructed to showcase women in engineering and present
engineering as a fun and interesting career choice for young people.
2003 Dalhousie Tour of Industries
An effort to keep highly educated Nova Scotian engineering students in the
province after graduation.

Another Success Story - an IEEE McNaughton Learning Resource Centre Upgrade Grant
|
|
2002 Red River College McNaughton
Centre Upgrade
An "upgrade" grant enables this Centre, established in 1984, to
continue be highly relevant to current students and reflect IEEE quality.
