EMC fundamentals and Computer modeling

Organized by: IEEE Ottawa EMC Chapter
Speaker: Dr. Franz Schlagenhaufer, Senior Research Fellow, The University of Western Australia Western Australian Telecommunications Research Institute (WATRI) Perth, Western Australia
Date & Time: Thursday, May 15, 2008, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Location:
FIDUS SYSTEMS Inc., 900 Morrison Drive, Suite 203, Ottawa, Ontario, K2H 8K7
Parking: Free
Admission: Free
Registration/Contact: Dr. Syed Bokhari, Chairman, IEEE Ottawa EMC chapter, Syed.Bokhari@fidus.ca, Office :(613) 828-0063 Ext. 377, Cell: (613) 277-9311
Abstract: Grounding, shielding, filtering and cabling/wiring are important design criteria to achieve EMC on the equipment level. In order to avoid costly overkill solutions and to tailor individual measures in the case of contradicting requirements, they must not be understood as cookbook style recipes but their application must be based on sound theoretical principles. This talk refreshes electromagnetic theory in a nutshell, but avoids the
mathematical burden. The nature of electric and magnetic dipoles, estimation of current flow in ground planes, EMC characteristics of transmission lines are some of the topics that covered in this presentation.

IEEE Ottawa 6th Annual Robotics Competition

Organized by: IEEE Ottawa Section - Robotics Competition Committee
Date & Time: Sunday, May 25, 2008 10:00-17:00
Location: SITE Building, University of Ottawa, Ottawa

Admission: All welcome - no charge
Details: http://orc.ottawa.ieee.ca/
Contacts: Rob Woolley and Rami Abielmona
Abstract: The Ottawa Robot Competition aims at bringing engineering awareness to students in grades 7 and 8 by presenting a fun and instructive approach to problem solving. Using Robolab LEGO MINDSTORMS/NXT kits, the students have around 8-10 weeks to design and build an autonomous robot. In teams of four to seven, they learn engineering concepts with the help of a mentor and come together to produce a working prototype.
