Biography

Dr Hastings has a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Metallurgical Science, both from the University of Queensland, Australia. His current position is Director, Reactor Development Operations, the AECL unit responsible for the development of the Advanced CANDU reactor.

He joined AECL at Chalk River Laboratories in 1968, attaining Senior Scientist level, and was Manager, Fuel Materials Branch. His primary research interests were in fuel and fuel cycles, and fusion ceramics. Dr Hastings is the author of more than 220 technical publications, has edited three books on nuclear fuel, and co-edited three on lithium ceramics for fusion applications.

He spent four years in the President's Office in Ottawa and is now based in Sheridan Park. Dr Hastings is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and a member of both the Canadian and American Nuclear Societies.
