Abstract

The road transportation network in most developed countries is increasingly congested. Reliable and comprehensive road traffic information does not exist today and is in demand by:

  • Road owners to help plan and better manage the infrastructure
  • Road users to better plan trips and arrival times to their destinations

This is a multi-billion dollar global market when annual transportation budgets and vehicle usage statistics are considered.  Unfortunately, high-quality road traffic information is extremely difficult to produce.  Many approaches have been tried but all have exhibit serious shortcomings.
The widespread adoption of mobile communication devices by consumers has enabled an innovative approach to generating road traffic information.  By passively and anonymously observing the location and movement of millions of mobile phones and other devices, it is possible to produce high-quality road traffic information.
IntelliOne’s Roadway Speed Measurement System (RSMS) is a turn-key mobile location system integrated within mobile network switching centers, enabling the automated processing of existing network data to generate new revenue from lucrative markets.
The advantages of RSMS and benefits to carriers, partners and users include:

  • Rapid deployment at mobile network switching centers
  • No additional load on the mobile network
  • Location-enabling network statistics for performance optimization
  • No field instrument installation and maintenance required to generate road speed data
  • Comprehensive coverage including major and minor roads (urban, suburban and rural)
  • Road traffic early incident detection
  • Origination-destination information enhances road construction planning
  • Value-added personalized navigation services

Tonight’s presentation will include an introduction to traffic measurement systems and specifically IntelliOne’s Technology and Network Systems Architecture. Plans to introduce the service to Ontario and Canada will be updated and time permitting, an on-line demonstration of the Service will be given.
