Abstract

Globalization is the increasing interconnection of people and places as a result of advances in transport, communication, and information technologies that causes political, economic, and cultural convergence. It is not a new phenomenon in the context of world history. One important factor influencing the magnitude and rate of change of globalization is the availability and access to energy. Energy is used to heat homes, provide transport, develop resources, and produce goods and services. As global energy demand increases and scarcity of energy resources becomes more prominent, new, emergent opportunities meet these needs thereby resulting in economic prosperity and increased standards of living. Conversely, failure to manage the economics of energy in a sustainable manner may lead to limited economic growth, environmental damage, degradation in the health of citizens and planet climate change.

This presentation gives an overview of the energy sector and discusses various influences from a global and Canadian perspective. Energy use projections to 2030 and emerging technologies are briefly presented followed by a suggested strategic path forward to meet our future energy challenge.
