Abstract

Fibre-optic sensors have received significant attention for their unique advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, compact size, potential low cost, and the possibility of distributed measurement over a long distance. In this talk, I will present our recent progress in developing techniques to achieve intelligent sensing of multiple environmental parameterswith single-fibre approach, which realise sensing of temperature, strain, humidity, salinity, saccharinity, bend, flow, and refractive index for possible applications as physical and chemical sensors.

Biography

Qiying Chen is the Canada Research Chair in Photonics and an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. He received Ph.D. degree in optics from Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1996. He worked in Japan from 1996 to 2000, first as a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University and then as a researcher in the National Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research. He was a postdoctoral researcher in the Photonics Group at the University of Toronto from 2000 to 2002. He worked as a research associate in the National Research Council of Canada before joining Memorial University in 2004. His research group is currently conducting research on ultrafast nano-photonics.
