Abstract

Do you believe that the computer files you deleted are gone? Do you know how much your computer can tell about you? A small demonstration of how forensic data is recovered may be revealing!

The aim of this seminar is to provide an overview of the "Forensic Science" methodology used in recovering digital information. Some actual cases will be discussed for illustrative purposes.

Outline:
- An introduction to the Centre of Forensic Sciences
- The work done in the Electronics Section
- Where digital evidence may be found
- What type of information can be recovered
- How evidence is recovered so that it is admissible in a court of law
- A demonstration of data recovery from a computer
- Miscellaneous examinations; gaming machines, stun guns, voice enhancement
- The examination of legal gaming machines
- How gaming machines work
- What differentiates a gaming machine from an amusement machine
- How gaming is regulated in Ontario

Biography

Denis Carlos is a Forensic Scientist in the Digital Evidence Unit, Centre of Forensic Sciences. He reports his findings based upon the examination and analysis of computers, digital media, personal organizers and other types of electronic equipment. As part of his job he is also called upon to execute search warrants and testify in the Ontario Courts of Justice as an expert witness.

Denis graduated in Electrical Engineering from Ryerson and obtained his Masters in Business Administration from York University. His engineering career has involved compiler development for IBM; design of government IT systems; computer consulting; development of a seismic research network around the Pickering nuclear power plant; retail operation of commercial VR machines and examination of Casino slot machines. Denis is an active member of the Scarborough Chapter Executive Board of the Professional Engineers of Ontario.
