Abstract

The last ten years have seen rapid evolution on two technological fronts.  First, the World Wide Web has matured to the point where it has become an integral part of everyday life for a large percentage of the human population.  In parallel, wireless telephony has freed users from a wired infrastructure, allowing un-tethered access – largely unconstrained by location.

Until recently these technologies evolved independently.  That's about to change, however.  Thanks to a new IEEE broadband wireless standard known as WiMAX, these disparate technological paths are about to converge, leading to vast and exciting new opportunities.

WiMAX is a high capacity broadband wireless technology offering coverage approaching that of PCS telephone networks with speeds reaching those of DSL or Cable internet service.  Known as a 4th generation technology (4G), WiMAX holds the promise of bringing broadband internet access to regions of the world where deploying traditional wired networks is impractical or cost excessive.  WiMAX truly has the potential to bridge the 'digital divide'.

With chipset makers and network equipment manufacturers promoting the new mobile version of the standard, the stage is now set for explosive growth in WiMAX deployments throughout the world.

The intent of the presentation is to elaborate on the technological features, benefits, and opportunities associated with WiMAX.  LTE, another leading 4G technology will also be contrasted with WiMAX as part of the presentation.
