Report
The Pickering Wind Generating Station Tour on September 17 attracted 75 IEEE
members, guests and student members from U of T, Ryerson and Waterloo.
Power and environment engineers showed enormous interests in wind power
generation.
The two presentations, given by Mr. Chuck Edey from OPG and Mr.
Dave Young from Kinectrics, were very informative. As a consequence,
the presentations ran an extra 40 minutes untill 8 o’clock without any one
leaving. After the presentations, a crowd of people still circled the
speakers with additional questions for half an hour. Everyone had their
supper while enjoying a video tape about the OPG wind turbine. As more
people arrived for the tour, the second group visited the tunnel in the
dark till 9 o’clock.
The Toronto Section notes its appreciation to OPG for their hospitality by
providing a bus to the site and also thanks Chuck for his excellent
introduction. As Chuck commented, this IEEE tour group was quite different
from typical tour groups by showing higher professional interest and
understanding. We hope our members and guests who benefited from this
esperience will contribute to the development and acceptance of wind
generation in Ontario in the near future.
During the tour the members of the Power Engineering Society received a CD
of the Proceedings of the PES General Meeting held in Toronto last July.
