Current electricity usage - click for more information
The Independent Electricity System Operator (formerly the operations centre of Ontario Hydro) forcasts electricity needs in Ontario, and balances the supply of and demand for electricity in Ontario and then directs its flow across the province's transmission lines. Congratulations to WIE Toronto Chair, Visda Vokhshoori, for her leadership in developing a strong and interesting WIE program that includes many innovative activity formats - Visda has also been recognized in her former IEEE Section (Mid Hudson) for notable services and contributions - please see the Women In Engineering home page for more details.

Certificate Image. Click to enlarge IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society honours its Toronto chapter as its Outstanding Chapter for 2004. The joint Toronto chapter which included AAES has recently been re-organized - please see the Signals & Computational Intelligence Joint Chapter home page for more details.

Congratulations to Signal Processing (formerly Signals and Applications) Chapter Chair, Sri Krishnan, for his leadership in developing a strong series of chapter activities in 2004.

Certificate Image. Click to enlarge Ryerson University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering publicly recognized the IEEE Toronto Section at its 2005 Awards ceremony on Nov 23 for its continued support of student activities through its program of awards.

Over the last decade, the Section has provide more that $50,000 in Scholarships to local universities and colleges. Dr. Wallas Khella, 1978-89 Section Chair and currently a member-at-large of the Section executive committee, was at the ceremony to present a couple of this year's Section awards and to receive the plaque from ECE department chair Dr. Sridhar Krishnan.

The Dance of Molecules: How Nanotechnology Is Changing Our Lives!     ... makes a great Christmas Gift!
Photo Image Author Ted Sargent (SM IEEE and a past chair of this Section) has been named by Scientific American magazine as a Research Leader for his contributions to solar technology within the 2005 Scientific American 50 -- the magazine's prestigious annual list recognizing outstanding acts of leadership in science and technology from the past year. Just announced, the list appears in the December issue, which hits newsstands on November 22nd.
Ted Sargent is a professor at the University of Toronto and a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His scientific research has been widely published, and he is a frequent lecturer at major international conferences in North America, Europe, and Japan. Ted is one of the world's leading researchers in the world of nanotechnology and was named "one of the world's top young innovators" by MIT's Technology Review Magazine and the Sierra Club has labelled him as one six "Earth's Innovators" for his groundbreaking work on solar technology.
In his new book The Dance of Molecules, Ted Sargent has set out to demystify the complex world of nanotechnology -- the science and engineering of building new materials and devices from the molecule up -- and offers a fascinating vision of what this innovative science may accomplish in the twenty-first century. And the best part is, you don't have to have a physics degree to understand it. Ted Sargent will be available for media interviews in Toronto on November 18 and December 2. To set up an interview or request a review copy of his new book, "The Dance of Molecules: how nanotechnology is changing our lives", please contact Colleen Clarke at 419.928.2420 or colleen.clarke@ca.penguingroup.com.
