July 8 - The Toronto Chapter of the IEEE Communucations Society presents a seminar
on "Capacity and Outage Issues of Wireless MIMO Systems
on Correlated Fading Channels", given by Dr. Q. T. Zhang of the City
University of Hong Kong.

July 20 - The Toronto Chapter of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society presents a seminar
on "Smarter Test For Nanometer Design",
given by Kathy Yang, an Applications Engineer Consultant with
Mentor Graphics in Ottawa.

July 21 - The third Women in Engineering meeting will feature
"Project Management - Completing Projects with Success", presented by Celia
Desmond, President of World Class Telecommunications.

July 23 - the IEEE Toronto Signals and Applications Chapter presents a seminar
on "Computer-aided Detection of Early Signs of Breast Cancer",
given by Dr. Raj Rangayyan, University Professor, at the University of
Calgary, Alberta.

July 26 - is the registration deadline to book your tour to the ABB Transformer
plant in Guelph - tour is on September 15 by bus leaving from the Yorkdale

 Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) is a national,
not-for-profit industry
association representing over 250 member companies in the electrical,
electronics and telecommunications industries in Canada.
Now in its ninth year, the EFC Foundation will award $50,000 to eligible
students in the fields of engineering, computer science and business
administration, as well as to eligible second or third phase electrical
apprentices. Application Deadline: August 12, 2004 - details

The 2004 Canadian Conference on
Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) was held May 2 - 5, 2004 in
Niagara Falls, Ontario. This was a very successful conference - 570
papers were scheduled for
presentation over three days - sixty oral sessions and one poster session.
These paper presentations, all three Sunday workshops, the opening reception,
two plenary sessions, two luncheon events, and the awards banquet were well

The 3rd International Conference for Upcoming Engineers (ICUE) was held
May 13-14, 2004 at Ryerson University in Toronto. The conference featured
85 technical papers (32 from outside Canada), 29 design projects, and 5
state-of-the-art tutorials, culminating in an awards banquet - please read

month's newsletter for some selected photos.

Shane Eaton, Ph.D. candidate in the ECE Department at U of T,
wins the 2004 LEOS Toronto "Explore your Science Award".

Litifa Noor of Ryerson University received the first "The Dr. Robert T.H.
Alden IEEE Canadian Foundation Scholarship" at the ICUE conference awards
banquet on May 14. This award is co-sponsored by the IEEE Toronto Section.

members. Our interests are primarily technical, in the diverse
fields of things electrical such as electrical power generation and
distribution, wired and wireless telecommunications, digital networks
and data processing, and the ubiquitous computer. There are many
