About this Web Site
This web site is hosted on the IEEE Entity Web Hosting server in Piscataway,
New Jersey, at the IEEE Operations Center. This site is intended to provide
information about the IEEE Toronto Section which is one of 20 Canadian
Sections within IEEE Canada (which is Region 7 of IEEE).
This version of the web site replaced the previous version in June, 2003
as part of the Section activities to celebrate the Section Centennial.
Pre-existing content pages, such as past chapter events, newsletter archive pages,
etc. are not being changed to the new format/appearance.
Because the individuals who administer and maintain web sites change from
time to time, this page has been prepared to detail the intent of the current
design.
Addressing
The URL of this web site should always be displayed as
"http://toronto.ieee.ca" which brings up the home page.
- all main directories can be addressed externally by apending the
directory name - e.g. "http://toronto.ieee.ca/events" for the events page.
- a "misc" directory is used for this page, the FAQ page, and the page
of links
- internal addresses should be specified as relative links not absolute
- e.g. to link to chapters from events, use ../chapters/index.html
- since the EWH server accomodates virtual web hosting our registered
domain name appears in your browser address window.
- the root directory only contains the index.html home page, past home pages,
and the style.css style sheet file
Consistency
All web pages use a common format and text enhancements
- 12 px navy Arial font for text, red for links, bold for headings,
only the first (page) heading is in red
- the colour gainsborough is uses as the background highlight color
- links are underlined only when covered by the cursor or when active
- HTML code is clean, no duplicate code
- images have 72 dpi resolution and are only stored once
- common service images are stored in an images directory
- photographs for specific events are stored in the specific event
subdirectory
Home Page
It is expected that the content of the home page will change on a regular
(monthly) basis. Preferably a color image (person, place, etc.) will be
included. For example, the startup home page will feature the Section
Centennial - some content is duplicated on the centennial page.
Ideally, month specific events will be featured - e.g. a high profile
Chapter presentation with a news item about the topic or the speaker (but
not an abstract or a biography)
Upcoming Events
The primary content on this web site is information relating to Section
events - of these, the "upcoming events" are the most important - technical
events planned by our Chapter committees and other events planned by our
Affinity Group committees are described on the relevent event pages, with
the date and author/title link displayed on both the home page and the
relevent Chapter and Affinity Group pages.
This page initially prepared on June 4, 2003 and subsequently modified,
by Bob Alden, web site designer.
