Toronto Section Never Sleeps, Reflections on 2008
by Visda Vokhshoori
Last year IEEE Toronto Section experienced one of its busiest year ever. The section organized close to 45 technical and professional meetings throughout the year. The section also augmented member services and activities such as partnering with Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council(TRIEC) to promote collaborative employment of immigrant engineers and the launch of the consultants database.
Inspired by similar event held by Montreal section, Toronto Section organized its first ever "Step Up to Senior Member" meeting in May. Over the course of two days the section volunteers addressed an overwhelming number of senior membership application: verified correctness, filled in the on-line senior membership application form and provided references where necessary. The session alone resulted in 37 approved elevations to senior member grade. Members like Phil Vlach and Tom Cumberland who have been with IEEE for more than a decade, welcomed this event. This was one of the most successful events of the year. All-in-all a total of 64 members were elevated to senior members in 2008.
There are lots of inventions that have changed the way we live. The pacemaker is a key example of such invention that has kept the rhythm of millions of heart beats. Due to its significance and strong ties to Toronto area, IEEE Toronto Section nominated Development of the First External Electronic Cardiac Pacemaker with Internal Electrodes for Continuous Clinical Use as its first IEEE Milestone. The milestone was approved by IEEE Executive Committee on June 30.
The year continued to be eventful. In July a highly successful one-day Symposium on Alternate Energy and Global Synergy was hosted by Ryerson University, co-sponsored by the IEEE Toronto Section (represented by the WIE Affinity Group). The Symposium brought in excess of hundred professionals and scientists from R&D, academia, industry and government together to discuss the issues concerning global warming. The outcome of the technical sessions was captured in the conference proceedings and a list of major recommendations was composed to help sustain the dialogue amongst the stakeholders.
With half of the year behind us one would think it was time to slow down. Not in Toronto. 2008 was host to IEEE Section Congress. Section Executives who participated connected with the IEEE global network. Their souvenir was the memorandum signed that made Pittsburgh and Toronto Sister sections. The sister status will provide an opportunity for Toronto and Pittsburgh to plan joint events, hold teleconferences and share experiences in operational policies and best practices.
As rightly noted in December 2008 edition of The Institute, Meet the Volunteers Driving Membership Recruitment, "What motivates volunteers to do so much work? It is to help IEEE continue as an organization that's worth joining."
Toronto Section is blessed with many motivated volunteers who spend hours on organizing IEEE activities.
I believe 2009 will be an even better year for IEEE Toronto Section as we gear up to host "The 2009 IEEE Toronto International Conference -Science and Technology for Humanity", September 27-29, 2009.
We hope to see many of you there!

"Building 32-Bit USB Peripheral Applications with Libusb" by Dennis Cecic — Mar. 7, 2009
Are you still trying to use Serial/Parallel ports for PC interfacing? Good luck. USB has emerged as the de-facto standard interface for PC connectivity. Unfortunately for developers, the USB programming model is relatively complex, compared to these traditional interfaces. The objective of this 1-day class is to review the important aspects of USB peripheral development (electrical, protocol, mechanical, certification), as well as providing hands-on experience in implementing a custom PC Host application using the cross-platform Libusb API, which will exchange data with a high-performance 32-bit USB microcontroller. The course will be run in a fully instrumented computer laboratory.

Volunteering a few hours a month is a very rewarding experience - we have a
great group of about 45 volunteers who contribute to the smooth running of
our Section - by distributing the workload over many Section members, the
individual load is kept small. If you are interested, please contact our
