Upcoming Courses  

In the spring of 2006, the IEEE Toronto Section is offering a 2-day course in Project Management, for those who manage or work on projects, but have little or no formal training in the field. The course is based on processes recommended by the Project Management Institute, the primary authority on project management.

Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame section is an attempt to feature the IEEE Fellows of the Toronto Section.

Dr. M. Reza IravaniDr. M. Reza Iravani, FIEEE - 2003 IEEE Fellow obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Manitoba. His research interests are in the Applications of power electronics to electric power systems; distributed generation and storage; renewable energy systems; modelling and analysis of electromagntic transient phenomena in power systems; power system dynamics and control.He is currently a professor at the The Edward S.Rogers Sr.Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering - University of Toronto and actively involved with the Energy Systems Group.He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.In 2003 he was conferred as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for contributions to power engineering education and the modeling, design, and control of power electronic converters for power system applications.

A report by Visda Vokhshoori on the WIE Feb 23rd event titled "From Financial Markets to Energy Markets"

The meeting started as a low key event with a handful of attendees networking.Visada - the WIE chair person introduced the keynote speaker, Ms. Puica Nitu with much accolades as a member of Ontario Power generation market.Puica is a Senior IEEE and a registered professional engineer in Ontario.Puica eloquently presented to the group explaining the different factors effecting the price of energy daily, risks involved and methods to manage risk.
Puica emphasized that - Electricity is a unique commodity, that is it is instantaneous.Further, she explained that this unique attribute of electricity makes the energy market extremely volatile and interesting at the same time.The room slowly began to get full with attedees. Gradually, Puica captivated her audiance with her style and personality and left them with a wealth of information.
In the end Visda, thanked Ms. Puica Nitu on behalf of the WIE Affinity group for her extremely informative presentation.

NEWS FROM IEEE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND THE HISTORY CENTER (2nd Quarter 2006)

IEEE VIRTUAL MUSEUM

At the beginning of this year, a new exhibit on nanotechnology opened at IEEE's award-winning pre-university educational site. In addition, the IEEE History Center is pleased to note that excerpts from exhibits in the IEEE Virtual Museum will be used by the Migrant department of the San Antonio Independent School District as part of a program that serves the educational needs of 760 children of migrant workers. Teachers, bringing laptops, visit the homes of student enrolled in the program. These teachers will be provided with CDs containing excerpts from the IEEE Virtual Museum exhibits.

CALL FOR 2006 EAB AWARD NOMINATIONS

The IEEE Educational Activities Board is accepting nominations of IEEE members for its annual awards. The deadline for nominations is 30 April 2006. Awards include: IEEE EAB Section Professional Development Award, IEEE EAB Meritorious Achievement Award in Accreditation Activities, IEEE EAB Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education, IEEE EAB Major Educational Innovation Award, IEEE EAB Pre-University Educator Award, IEEE EAB Meritorious Service Citation, and the IEEE EAB Employer Professional Development Award.

Volunteering a few hours a month is a very rewarding experience - we have a great group of about 45 volunteers who contribute to the smooth running of our Section - by distributing the workload over many Section members, the individual load is kept small - we are looking for a few additional members to help out in the following specific areas:
