Special Report on the 2004 Canadian Conference on Electrical and
Computer
Engineering, held May 2 - 5, 2004, in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
This was a very successful conference, with 570 papers scheduled for
presentation over three days - including sixty oral sessions and one
poster session. These paper presentations, all three Sunday
workshops, the opening reception, two plenary sessions, two luncheon
events, and the awards banquet were well attended and appreciated.
For a full report and access to the plenary presentations, please
visit the conference web site - photos to be posted on that web site
shortly. Prior to the conference, the host Section, Hamilton, had
planned a dedication ceremony for the DeCew Falls generating station on
the ourskirts of St. Catherines. The following is a few photos to
provide a glimpse of the activities that included highly technical,
educational, and human components. Click on the photos to view

Profile on Bob Hanna
Dr. Robert H. (Bob) Hanna was the first IEEE Section volunteer to be profiled in this
newsletter (July 2003 issue).
Since that time, he has organized the Centennial Banquet in October 2003, was
elected to be President of IEEE Canada in 2006 and 2007, was conferred the
grade of Fellow of IEEE by the Board of Directors, and has inspired and
guided the organizing committee of the recently held and most sucessful
conference in Niagara Falls.
Bob is shown in his hotel suite overlooking the Canadian Falls during
a rare break from looking after all those details that make a good
conference an excellent one. Our congratulations to Bob
for many jobs well done!

Meeting Reports
Here is two brief reports submitted by the meeting organizers:
-
Our new Affinity Group for Women in Engineering -
(officially formed on March 24, 2004) held its first general interest meeting
on April 2nd. The turn out of 23 enthusiastic individuals was
heartwarming. Joan Tuzet , Visda Vokhshoori and Anna Araujo were
elected Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer. A lively
panel discussion was held on the topic "The role of women in
engineering: has it changed over the years". The panelists were:
Irene Katezla, PhD Principal Partner of LPI Solutions, Susan Treki,
PEng, PEO North York Education Director, and Kostas Plataniotis, PhD,
IEEE Toronto Section Chair. Dr. Plataniots welcomed Toronto WIE
to the IEEE Toronto Section in his opening remarks and emphasized his
support for this affinity group. Irene Katezla pointed out that
opportunities for women to advance their careers in the field of
engineering are increasing. Women are now offered more
challenging responsibilities to take on. Susan Treki spoke about
the significance of programs that are geared towards girls. These
outreach programs organized for girls in various stages of schooling can
play a positive role in promoting engineering among women.
Everyone agreed that in order to break into the male dominated world of
engineering, women don't need to change, they don't need to act
differently, i.e. 'manly'. The atmosphere was very friendly.
Guests were mingling till 10 PM! - check out the meeting page for more information.
-
The Power Engineering Chapter meeting on Power Systems
Operations on May 4 was well received. 18 people attended with
very good questions and discussions. This enthousiastic meeting
wrapped up 30 minutes later than scheduled. Upon the request of
the attendees, the speaker provided his presentations of the three
topics that he covered in the meeting for publication on our web site -
check out the meeting page for more information.

Life Member News
The recent LM meeting on April 20 was attended by eleven life members
who were very interested to learn how to use the Internet to access IEEE
member services, including how to renew IEEE membership annually (this
now is required for all life members), updating their own personal
information in the IEEE membership database, and obtain an IEEE web
account. Please click for details.
This meeting was held at the University of
Toronto IEEE McNaughton Learning Resource Centre which was created and has
been upgraded by grants from the IEEE Canadian Foundation.
