Report on our Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner

This annual event was held at the traditional location - the magnificant Old Mill Inn on October 16.   IEEE SSIT president Brian O'Connell, travelled to Toronto to recognize Walter Zessner by presenting him with the SSIT lifetime achievement award.   Section Chair Kostas Plataniotis presented Walter with a comemorative plaque - "IEEE Toronto Section honours Walter W. Zessner as the Founding Chair of the Social Implications of Technology Chapter in 1989, and designates him as Chapter Chair Emeritus of the Engineering and Human Environment Chapter".

IEEE Communications Society 2002-03 President Celia Desmond presented the 2004 IEEE Communications Society Chapter Achievement Award to Alagan Anpalagan (Chair) and Xavier Fernando (Vice Chair) of the Toronto Communications Chapter.

Kostas Plataniotis announced two Section Achievement awards that will be presented at a future Section executive meeting since the recipients were unable to attend the Awards evening.   Emanuel Istrate is the recepient of the 2004 "IEEE Toronto Section Chapter Chair of the Year" award, and George Eleftheriades is the recepient of the 2004 "IEEE Toronto Section Engineer of the Year" award "for pioneering contributions to the theory and applications of Metamaterials".

Kostas Plataniotis presented Past Section Chair Bob Hanna a certificate of appreciation for his leadership over the previous two years and especially for his direction of Toronto Section's Centennial celebrations.   Bob was also praised for his work as general chair of the planning committee for the 2004 Canadian Conference on Electrical & Computer Engineering held in Niagara Falls last May.

The guest speaker was Brian O'Connell, president of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology, whose presentation was entitled "Keeping the Gloves Off" - this title reflects the critical importance of societal issues to the everyday practice of engineering and not merely as a component of academic theory or terminating with formal education.   Click here for the full text of Brian's speech and here for more photos.   You can click on any of the four photos below to view a larger version.

Photo Photo IAS Chapter - Industry Applications Chair Chair Vince Scaini reports that his October 27 seminar on "Medium Voltage Drives in Industrial Applications" by Dr. Navid Zargari of Rockwell Automation was a great sucess with a good portion of the meeting being taken up with questions and answers on the topic.   At the end, Vince presented Dr. Zarfari with a token of appreciation (photo at left).   Vince is also pleased to welcome two new volunteers to his chapter committee - Dr. Dewei (David) Xu (Ryerson University, Assistant Professor) to the post of Vice Chair and Mr. Ehsan Behboudi (Irving Paper, Engineer) as Secretary of the Toronto Section IAS Chapter.   The next meeting is being planned for the end of November - please watch our Section web site for details.

PES Chapter - The IEEE Toronto Section presents an award to the Network Operating Division (NOD), Hydro One in recognition and appreciation of valued support to the Section in the past years at the Power Engineering Chapter tour of the Ontario Grid Control Centre at Barrie on October 21, 2004.   Mr. Paul Tremblay, Director of NOD (left) received the plaque presented by Dr. Wallas Khella, a Member at Large of the Section (photo at right).

Photo Women In Engineering - The IEEE Toronto WIE Affinity Group October meeting was a roundtable dicussion on the topic of communication, "To Efficiently Improve Communication and Eventual Well Being".   Nine people attended this meeting.   The meeting was held at the "Young Thailand' restaurant, 81 Church Street.   Nancy Vanitchanant, WIE Secretary/Treasurer moderated the discussion.   To achieve good communication is to decide on the intended outcome.   There are different ways to get the point across.   Studies show 75% of what we communicate is non-verbal.   We can enhance this by utilizing all methods/tools, e.g. listen intently, document, take notes, use emails, etc..   Mastering this art requires practice, patience; it is a life long process.   Nancy asked us to put ourselves in the shoes of the following individuals and describe what we'd do in each case - she then went over some suggestion on how to say "No".
- A lazy teammate asks for your assistance and takes all the credits
- A pushy boss tests your capability and willingness by overworking you
- A slick team member tries your managerial skills by being incorporative or using charms
We learned a lot through the exchange of ideas and experiences.   The ambient of the restaurant was great, the service was fast and efficient.   The food was delicious.   We all commeded Jin on her choice!   She ordered number 13 from the menu!   We thank all the members who attended - and hope to see you at our future meetings!
