IEEE Toronto WIE Affinity mentoring event report.

September 8th,2005 : The IEEE Toronto Women in Engineering Affinity group held a spectacular and very informative Mentoring Event.Heidi Lui, Member, IEEE Toronto Section attended this event for the first time and this is what she said "It was my first time attending a IEEE event. It was better than I expected. The environment was intimate, since there weren't many people. And I actually got some good advice from people The best part was mentoring one on one, since I could ask questions specific to my needs. I would definitely attend another mentoring meeting, or anything that would be relevant to me."
Mentoring has it's roots from Greek Mythology when Odysseus left his son Telemachus under the guidance of to a man named Mentor, before enlisting for the Trojan War. The WIE Affinty group's meeting this fall centered around the theme of "Mentoring" with a goal to bring talent, knowledge and experience to its audiance through a medium of shared learning and expereince.
The WIE Affinity group hosted 26 people from various walks of professional life.Visda Vokhshoori, WIE Affinity Toronto chair kicked off the event and introduced the fist guest speaker, Dr. Robert Hanna, IEEE Canada President Elect who shared his experiences through his path to success. He emphasized that it was not just his strong knowledge of fundamentals of the engineering but his abilty to communicate effectively too that led him to acheive success. Later on,Mr. Michael Alexander - the author of "How to Inherit Money", (HarperCollins, 97) spoke on the differences between Canadians and Americans as applied to the role of the individual in the workplace and reflected these difference on the theme of mentoring. He also related these difference to an interesting topic - Competing Against America: Why Canada Has Fallen Behind in the Race for Talent and Wealth (and What to do About It)from his much aclaimed book. Subsequently,Ms.Jill Andrew-Director of Jam Productions & Boutique Communications, and Metor Newspaper Workology Columnist, provided the audience with practical tips on how one can utilize tools such as resumes, references, society membership and networking events to promote herself/himself and achieve the goals. for our Women In Engineering Group    For more information on the mentoring event, please contact Visda

A closing note with a few lines from

Shakesphere - To be, or not to be (from Hamlet 3/1)

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?....
