Committees 2010-2011
Mailing lists and online communities
We have established several moderated (messages and subscriptions go through list admin approval) mailing lists to increase the flow of information among different focus groups: members, student members and GOLD members (i.e. those who have received their first degree within last ten years).
-
IEEE FS MEMBERS mailing list is mainly used to inform the members of IEEE Finland section of the current and topical events, and moderated discussion among members.
-
IEEE FS STUDENTS mailing list is mainly used to inform the student members of IEEE Finland section of the current and topical events, and moderated discussion among student members.
-
IEEE FS GOLD mailing list is mainly used to inform the IEEE GOLD members within IEEE Finland Section of the current and topical events, and for moderated discussion among GOLD members.

IEEE-FS is also present in Facebook and LinkedIn.

Distinguished speaker series
In order to provide our members a better access to most recent information in our professional field and a tighter collegial environment, we have established a IEEE distinguished speaker series in Finland.
IEEE Finland Section invites you to join these events as they occur. The lectures are open and free of charge to all members, offer excellent opportunities for informal discussions with knowledgeable colleagues and professional networking.
As core part of this activity, IEEE Finland Section informs about distinguished lecturers organized by IEEE Societies through the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program.
However, any IEEE member can propose a highly esteemed academic, industrial or societal person as a speaker in the series through IEEE Finland Section or through appropriate Chapter of IEEE Societies, who then will pass the invitation to IEEE FS MEMBERS mailing list.

Student and GOLD activities
The IEEE Finland Student and GOLD committee organizes activities in cooperation
with IEEE student branches. The committee has own homepage.
For supporting local Student Branch activities the following student counsellors have been nominated:
-
Helsinki: Erkki Oja
-
Tampere: Moncef Gabbouj
-
Oulu: Olli Silven
The goal of Student Activities and Membership Development is to increase the national activities and networking of local student branches. Maciej Borkowski coordinates national activities, please contact him or local student counsellor to activate your local student branch if there is no active student branch at the moment.
IEEE Finland Section grants 500 euros to each active Student branch for establishing a yearly prize of IEEE Finland Section Best Master's Thesis. The prize is provided that (i) the nomination committee includes local student branch members and some senior IEEE member, (ii) the thesis is accepted with grade 4 or 5. For being active, the Student branch shall have a selected local Student branch chair and an up-to-date web site. The Student branch should also organize publicity for the Master's Thesis Prize competition and festivity for its presentation.
Information of IEEE GOLD activities can be found at: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/gold/.

How to request for financial support
IEEE Finland Section grants financial support twice a year to conferences, symposia, workshops and similar events. The chapters may also apply money for other purposes. The grants vary from few hundred to thousand euros, depending on the scale of the event. The events, which satisfy the following criteria, are favoured:
-
The topic of the event falls within the field of the IEEE .
-
Scientific impact, e.g., the proceedings appear in IEEEXplore.
-
The event is held in Finland.
-
Other locations may be considered if they clearly benefit the Finnish IEEE members.
-
The topic of the event falls within the interests of Finnish IEEE members.
-
The organisers provide reduced participation fees to the IEEE members
The first annual deadline for the applications is 28th of February, and the second annual deadline is 31st of August. Most of the available funds will be granted after the first annual deadline. The applications are evaluated by the IEEE Finland Section Executive Committee in the regular meetings on March and September, respectively. The Section has a limited budget and only few events can be supported annually. However, all requests will be answered after the decision has been made.
An application should include at least a request submitted by the head of the event and a call for papers, or similar description of the event. The applications should be addressed to the IEEE Finland Section and e-mailed to the treasurer. In term 2010-2011, the treasurer is Ciprian Doru Giurcaneanu.
