Braintech Summit 2007
First International Conference on Brain Stimulation Devices, Networks, Circuits and Systems

BrainTechnology is the application of electronics, engineering, physiology, biochemistry and related disciplines to the human brain and related structures. It has now reached a level of commercial and scientific maturity that will produce enormous benefits to patients and profits to investors. Hundreds of thousands of people have already been helped by brain– and neuro-stimulation products that restore hearing to the deaf, sighting to the blind and relief to those with chronic pain or neurological disorders that cannot be addressed by conventional pharmacology. BrainTechSummit2007 promises to be an exciting event and covers a range of technologies & market segments in braintechnology, including neuromodulation/neuromorphing, neural prosthesis, neurodiagnostics, neurostimulation, brainFitness and NeuroBody Sensor Networks

Navigated Intraoperative Ultrasound System
Institutskolloquium

Depending only on the preoperative data in an Image Guided Neurosurgery (IGN) can lead to significant mistakes due to the brain shift caused after the craniotomy. Therefore in modern IGN intraoperative data are employed to update the preoperative ones. However the volume and the operating cost of most of the imaging modalities (MRI and CT) are serious arguments against their use in the operating room (OR). Ultrasound (US) is a cost effective and mobile solution for acquiring incomplete intraoperative data. However the software part of such systems is integrated in the US system leading to a strong software-hardware dependency. We hereby present an online and open source computer based system, which is able to serve as a tool for interactive image guided neurosurgery (iIGN) in the operating room (OR) by registering intraoperative Ultrasound (US) data to preoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data. This facilitates the interpretation of the intraoperative US images which suffer from speckle noise, shadowing and iatrogenic caused image artifacts. The data acquisition, processing and registration is done by a software independent from the US system, based on the OsiriX open source DICOM viewer, the features of which have been expanded through the development of custom plug-ins. The software part of the system is able to communicate and work with any US system that exports data in DICOM format via Ethernet port.

3rd International IEEE Scientific Conference on Physics and Control (PhysCon 2007)
International conference

During the last few years there was a tremendous growth of scientific activities in the fields related to both Physics and Control theory: nonlinear dynamics, micro- and nanotechnologies, self-organization and complexity, etc. New horizons were opened and new exciting applications emerged. Experts with different backgrounds starting to work together need more opportunities for information exchange to improve mutual understanding and cooperation. The Conference "Physics and Control 2007" will be the third international conference focusing on the borderland between Physics and Control with emphasis on both theory and applications. With its 2007 address at Potsdam, Germany, the conference will be located for the first time outside of Russia. The major goal of the Conference is to bring together researchers from different scientific communities and to gain some general and unified perspectives in the studies of controlled systems in physics, engineering, chemistry, biology and other natural sciences. We hope that the Conference will help experts in control theory to get acquainted with new interesting problems, and help experts in physics and related fields to know more about ideas and tools from the modern control theory.

Monitoring sleep and sleepiness with new sensors within medical and industrial applications
International conference in conjunction with a EU project meeting

Sleepiness and sleep (quality and duration) have become important factors in health and safety and there is considerable interest in developing tools for unobtrusive monitoring of these states and their transitions. This is the main research aim of the SENSATION project (Advanced sensor development for attention, stress, vigilance and sleep/wakefulness monitoring) which involves 45 partners in academia and industry and is now nearing the midpoint of its research life. We are therefore inviting colleagues to a scientific symposium to discuss the state of the art on unobtrusive monitoring of sleep and sleepiness. The subject area includes the physics and technology involved in sensors and sensor systems, the physiology of sleepiness and sleep quality (including risk criteria and automatic scoring systems) and the implementation of technology and physiology in medical and industrial environments. We think this may be a unique opportunity to exchange views on these important topics.
