ABSTRACT

This talk introduces an error resilient system for the transmission of compressed image/video images over mobile communication channels. The error resilient system relies on using unequal error protection (UEP) based upon rate compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes, and error concealment modifications performed in the image/video decoder. In order to perform unequal error protection, a bit error sensitivity study of the bits produced by the source coder is performed. Bit classification based upon the bit error sensitivity studies is then used to change the level of error protection applied by the channel coder. Synchronisation and error robustness are retained by using the Error Resilient Entropy Coding (EREC). The performance of the system was tested on a wavelet-based SPIHT (Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Tree) image coder, and a H.263 video coder.
