Student Travel Prizes

At a meeting of the UKRI Communications Chapter committee in 1992, it was decided to offer grants to assist full-time students to travel to conferences or symposia in order to present their own papers.

The conferences for which grants are offered are determined in advance by the committee and will normally be those conferences which are sponsored or supported by members of the UKRI Communications Chapter.

The number of grants and the amounts are decided by the Chapter committee; it is not intended that the grants will cover all the expenses in attending a conference, support from other sources is expected. Applications for conferences not specified by the committee will not be accepted.

It is our intention that grants will be awarded on merit and where possible we will receive advice on the best papers presented by students to the designated conference.

The following procedures were agreed.
  1. applicants must be registered for full-time study in a UK higher education institution and a brief letter of verification and support for the student from the head of department must accompany the application,
  2. the endorsement of the student's supervisor is required, (applications will normally be coordinated by the supervisor),
  3. applicants must supply evidence that a paper has been accepted for presentation in the conference, and the applicant must be the main author,
  4. all papers will be refereed by the conference organisers and it is on the advice of the organisers that the best papers will be decided,
  5. applications should be made by the student as soon as possible after the acceptance of the paper is known,
  6. the award will normally be made at the conference,
  7. if the applicant is not already a member of the IEEE and/or ComSoc, part of the award should be used to join the IEEE/ComSoc as a student member. In line with ComSoc travel grants, for 2001 this will be changed so that the applicant must already be a member of IEEE and ComSoc at the time of application.

In making an application, endorsed by your supervisor, please ensure that you indicate clearly the conference title (from the list below) and the title of your paper, sending the letter of support from your head of department at the same time. Please state clearly if you are a already a member of the IEEE and give your member number (see 7 above). There is no application form.

All complete applications (which must contain all the elements above) should be made to the Chapter Secretary.

Please follow the instructions carefully when applying for student travel prizes.
