In the first section of this talk the author will present an overview of photonics activities in Ireland, with an emphasis on the impact of SFI and photonics activities in Cork. Following this, the transmitter requirements 40 Gbit/s systems will be discussed, based on experiments carried out using electro absorption modulators.
