Por la presente invitamos a Ud. al acto de lanzamiento del nuevo nombre del IIE para el cual se rinde homenaje al Prof. Agustín Cisa. Asimismo aprovecharemos la ocasión para resaltar otras figuras de nuestra historia y presente institucional. La ocasión será asimismo una buena oportunidad para conocer en que está el Instituto y su proyección a futuro.

Abstract: ITU-T defined Next Generation Networks (NGN) as networks with a set of well defined characteristics (e.g. packet – based networks, QoS enabled transport, separation of services related functions and underlying transportation technologies, generalized mobility). The use of packet-based networks instead of circuit switched-based networks in NGN brings the problematic of IP telephony. IP telephony also known as Internet telephony or packet telephony or Voice over IP can be defined as the conversational exchange of voice (or more generally multimedia content) over packet based networks. It is not a novelty. However, it is only now that it is gaining more and more momentum in the context of NGN, thanks to the emergence and maturity of standard specifications. This speech focuses on NGN and the inherent IP telephony services they provide. We first introduce the basic standard building blocks of IP telephony in NGN. The signalling protocols (e.g. SIP, Megaco/H.248), media handling protocols (e.g. RTP),

and QoS approaches (e.g. RSVP, DiffServ) are successively introduced. The second part of the speech is devoted to concrete NGN architectures that use the standard IP telephony building blocks. The 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and the soft-switches based – architectures are discussed and illustrated with concrete case studies. The last part focuses on how to build value added IP telephony services in NGN. The application programming interfaces such as SIP servlet and Web services are presented. Concrete examples of IP telephony services built using these APIs are used for illustration purpose. Research directions are identified throughout the speech.

Biography: Roch H. Glitho [SM] (http://www.ece.concordia.ca/~glitho/) holds a Ph.D. (Tekn. Dr.) in tele-informatics (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden), and M.Sc. degrees in business economics (University of Grenoble, France), pure mathematics (University Geneva, Switzerland), and computer science (University of Geneva). He works in Montreal, Canada as adjunct associate professor at Concordia University. He also works as a consultant at Ericsson Canada. In the past he worked as a Senior Specialist in network management for Ericsson Telecom in Stockholm, and as an R&D engineer for a computer manufacturer in Oslo, Norway.

His industrial experience includes research, international standards setting (e.g. contributions to ITU-T, ETSI, TMF, ANSI, TIA, and 3GPP), product management, project management, systems engineering and software/firmware design. He is an IEEE distinguished lecturer, a senior technical editor of IEEE Communications Magazine, a technical editor of IEEE Network, and a technical editor of IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials Journal. In the past he has served as Editor-In-Chief of IEEE Communications Magazine, and Editor-In-Chief of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials Journal. His research areas include architectures for endusers services, distributed systems, non conventional networking, and networking technologies for emerging economies. In these areas, he has authored more around 90 peer-reviewed papers, more than twenty of which have been published in well-known refereed journals. He has also guest-edited some 10 special issues of refereed journals and has more than 20 patents in the aforementioned areas.

“Design of Integrated Circuits for Electromagnetic Compatibility”

Summary:
The increasing hostility of the electromagnetic environment, caused substantially by the ubiquitous adoption of wireless technologies as mobile telephones and personal computers, represents a huge challenge for the reliability of real-time embedded systems. In this scenario, electromagnetic interference (EMI) can induce transient faults in the electronics. Upon such conditions, the embedded systems reliability is degraded. Depending on the application where these systems are used for, the consequences can be catastrophic.

This talk discusses techniques for the enhancement of signal integrity in integrated circuits (ICs). The presentation is geared towards exploiting hybrid (hardware + software) solutions to design ICs robust to radio-frequency (RF) energy created within or outside an integrated circuit.

The talk is divided in two parts. The first one addresses some of the commonly used solutions to design multi-layer, high-density SoCs and boards for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) -compliant embedded applications. Procedures and standards used to test integrated circuits with respect to electromagnetic emission and susceptibility will also be briefly presented.

The talk’s second part describes recent research carried out at the Catholic University (PUCRS) to support the design of ICs for embedded applications. From the hardware point-of-view, this research is focused on two solutions: development of intellectual property (IP) cores and techniques to dynamically control the on-chip clock distribution network. In terms of software, profiling techniques have been intensively explored to guide the development of robust application codes and kernels for real-time operating systems (RTOS).

Currículum
Fabian Vargas received his B.S. degree in EE from the Catholic University (PUCRS), Brazil, in 1988, the M.Sc. degree in CS from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), also in Brazil, in 1991, and the Ph.D. degree from the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), France, in 1995. Since 1996 he is Associate Professor at the Catholic University (PUCRS). In 1997 he founded and chaired for six years the Latin American Group of the IEEE Computer Society – Test Technology Technical Council (LA-TTTC). In 2000, he created the 1st IEEE Latin American Test Workshop (LATW). His research interests include Fault-Tolerant Systems Design, On-Line Testing, and Robust Hardware-Software Design for Embedded Systems. Prof. Vargas is a Golden Core Member of the IEEE Computer Society.

IPTV is generating huge interest in the telecom industry lately. By offering video over their access infrastructure, Telcos hope to match the voice, video and data (”triple-play”) offering of Cable providers. However, unlike Cable TV systems that are typically analog broadcast transmissions, IPTV uses IP-multicast over point-to-point hybrid Fiber/DSL infrastructure that while enabling more efficient networks, is also causing Telcos growing pains in field deployments.
In this tutorial, we will provide an overview of the network architectures and will highlight the various tradeoffs (e.g., channel change latency vis-a-vis compression technology). We will focus on hardware and software technologies from the service provider core to the home — multicast transport, DSL technologies, MPEG standards and home-networking requirements such as the IPTV set-top box. Finally, we will also review the regulatory issues faced by Telcos, and describe the various lifestyle services such as “CallerId-on-TV” and converged voice-video applications that provides IPTV its cutting-edge differentiation
