6.1.  Climate

Fujian.gif (20589 bytes)Beijing is located in the temperate zone affected by continental monsoon. The summer is hot and dry, sometimes showers. It is recommended that you should take an umbrella while going outdoors because the sunshine is a bit strong. The temperature of July is about 25oC ~ 33 oC.

More information about climate can be obtained from the homepage China Meteorological Administration http://211.147.16.25/ywwz/.

6.2.  Health and Safety

The Doctor Is InThe major health problem will be calenture in July of Beijing, because the weather is hot and dry. So stay away from direct sunshine at noon and keep yourself in rooms that possess air conditioning. And you would better take some calenture medicine with you while going outdoors.

The second major health risk will be diarrhea, caused by unsanitary food. So make sure that the food you eat has been cooked and the water is distilled.

Public security in Beijing is actually assurance. To ensure that you have a pleasant lift in Beijing, please pay attention to the following points:

1)     Keep your money and valuable baggage in a safe place.

2)     Beware of some people taking away your belongings, especially in crowded place.

3)     Whenever and wherever you meet troubles, just ask the nearest police for help.

6.3.  Language

6.5.  How to make phone call in China

GSM networks (GSM 1800 and 900) and CDMA network provide coverage in every city of China. Cellular phones from other countries work in China. Mobile phone rental service is hardly available in China.

It is easy to buy a local GSM SIM card in China. Shenzhouxing, issued by China Mobile and Ruyitong, issued by China Unicom are recommended for foreign travelers in China, since they require no document. A SIM card costs from 35-100 RMB depends on its provider and combination of numbers ( if you buy it in the airport it is more expensive). Prepaid charging card in amount of 50 RMB and 100 RMB are available in post offices, stores, newsstands and super markets. It is easy to use with bilingual prompt. However, an international call via a mobile phone is very expensive.

Most public telephones you see in China are IC telephones, which are for local, long distance call and IDD. The 201 phone card, which can be used on the 201 phone machine in the apartment in the campus, is available on some of them. The rate for IDD is very expensive, and IP phone card can not be used on them.

The more cheap and convenient way to make long distance and international phone calls for students is to make phone calls in the special IP telephone business office which is usually available in the campus.

To make an international call from China please uses the following procedure:-

e.g. to dial USA

00                 +        1    +               215      +            999 9999

(to get an international line) (country code) (area code without any zeros) (ph number)

6.6.  Flavor

jiaoziThe highly sophisticated food culture is a unique characteristic to Chinese culture. It is probably also the best-known feature of Chinese culture by foreigners.

For centuries Beijing has been the capital of China. Emperors of different dynasties all had the best cooks at their service ,so it is inevitably influenced by the imperial cooking and diverse in nature.

Beijing Roast Duck (Peking Duck) is the most famous dish for Beijing, usually prepared for a minimum of six people, of which the crisp skin is the most prized part. Roast Duck's pieces are wrapped in thin pancakes with onions or leeks, cucumber, turnip and plum sauce. Upon request, the remainder of the duck meat can be saute with bean sprouts, and the bones made into a wonderful soup with cabbage.

Hot pot is also a favorite dish for foreigners and local residents alike. People gather around a small pot boiled with charcoal, pour the slices of mutton for a while, then eat the meat with a specially made sauce. However, it may not be a good dish because of the hot weather in summer.

Rice, dumplings, noodles or buns are widely eaten in Beijing. Zhajiang noodle in Beijing is well known in China.

You can have a taste of some genuine Beijing snacks too. For example, Lvdagun (sticky rice with sweetened bean paste), zhagao (made with sticky rice), wandouhuang (made with bean) are yummy treats in Beijing, for these, you’d better go to Gu Lou, the Drum Tower.

Beijing Cuisine is notable for its hundreds of dishes with special flavors that will not be found elsewhere in China. The cuisine does not emphasize strangeness or even uniqueness, just delicious food made from common ingredients and providing very agreeable tastes

6.7.   Culture & Arts

mask.jpg (14667 bytes)The Chinese take their tea seriously. No doubt about that. Tea is consumed in liters: cups upon cups of the lovely, steaming, fragrant stuff. While most everyday tea is just a matter of water sloshed over tea leaves, a true Chinese tea aficionado knows there are meticulous details of brewing time, water temperature, quality of water, types of tea pots and cups that make a big difference in the result. So, don’t forget to have a try.

With over 5,000 years of existence, China has developed its own distinctive culture. This is very apparent when you view the traditional theater forms. Shadow Puppets, Peking Opera, Acrobatics can’t be missed, in which art and artistry are bound up.

To know more about the life of people in Beijing, you’re advised to have a visit to old hutongs. A hutong is an ancient city alley or lane typical in Beijing, where hutongs run into the several thousand. Surrounding the Forbidden City, many were built during the Yuan (1206-1341), Ming (1368-1628) and Qing (1644-1908) dynasties. The main buildings in the hutong were almost all quadrangles--a building complex formed by four houses around a quadrangular courtyard. You can try the new pastime -- roaming through Beijing's old, narrow streets, hutongs, by old-fashioned pedicab to visit siheyuan, the old quadrangles, and learn about the daily life of ordinary Beijing citizens. It’ll be very interesting.
