MGA Achievement Award

Mrs. Ramalatha Marimuthu, R10 WIE Coordinator and Chair, Madras IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group has received the MGA Achievement Award for the year 2008, conferred by IEEE, USA. She was given this award at the Region 10 meeting held at Hanoi, Vietnam, where around 200 members attended from all the countries across the Region. This is a very prestigious award, and she is the first Indian woman to be honored with the award for the outstanding contributions she has made to numerous IEEE activities and the example she set in carrying forward the goals and objectives of the IEEE MGA Board.
This award consists of a cash prize of US$250 and a plaque, which carries the following citation:

"For her dedicated mentoring of IEEE students and encouraging them to focus their efforts towards contributions to benefit humanity.”


She has been the IEEE Student Branch Counsellor of Easwari Engineering College (2002 - till date) for the past 7 years, Founder Chair of Madras Section Women in Engineering (2007 – till date), R10 WIE Coordinator (2008 – till date)  and has introduced many innovative activities to increase the professional ethics and social responsibility of Engineering Students and to increase the IEEE and WIE membership through them
The activities which were recognized worthy of the award were:

  1. Sangamam Project  (Technology transfer to rural areas) and the various programmes organized under it. – youth development program, women and eco development program were organized to increase the social responsibility of the Engineering Students by involving them in bringing together technology and rural society.
  2. STAR programmes – Encouraging rural children to take up technical career. Teaching Electronics and Computer for the rural school children using self developed Video presentations on the subjects.
  3. Open Day Career guidance programme for the parents and students of rural schools -  To guide the school  children on the course they can take up when they come out of school.
