Program: Knowledge to Women – Career Guidance

Date: 02.03.09

Venue: Padma Subramaniyam Bala Bhavan Matriculation Higher
Secondary School, Mangadu, Tamil Nadu, India.

A career guidance program was organized by the IEEE Student Branch of Sri Muthukumaran Institute of
Technology, Chikkarayapuram (Near Mangadu), Chennai on 2nd March, 2009 for the students of class
11 from Padma Subramaniyam Bala Bhavan Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Mangadu. A total
strength of 50 students attended this program.  They were given a brief introduction about engineering
with a presentation showing them about
the various fields in engineering. Also they were explained about what they will study under various
branches. The students were then divided into batches and taken around the college premises.

These are some of the programmes organized with the various student branches in their rural area. Some
more programmes are planned like, Rural Youth Development Programme where the local dropouts from
school are given training in servicing of electrical equipments, wiring, coil winding etc. This is sure to make
them employable and reduce the possibility of development of antisocial elements. This also increases the
social responsibility of the Engineering students.

The uniqueness of the project has kindled the interests of Engineering students that it has extended all
over Region 10. The Sections are taking up this project and organizing these programmes with their
student branches. For example, this year Bangalore Section is organizing a programme near Surathkal
with National Institute of Technology where the rural children are taught Engineering Basics by the
Engineering Students in their own mother tongue. Gujarat Section is organizing a long term training
programme for the underprivileged women in that area. Lahore Section, Singapore Section and
Bangkok Section are some of the sections taking up this project in their areas.

This novel project has increased the visibility of IEEE in R10. Many colleges start the IEEE
student branches since they want to have a WIE affinity Group. This is reflected in the sudden
escalation of 50% affinity groups in R10 within one year.
