SUBJECT: Student Activities EXCOM Report (4/98)

A wide variety of student activities are planned for the Student Conference
at Southeastcon '98. The host student branch at the University of Central
Florida (UCF) has included in the student competitions, in addition to the
traditional hardware and paper competitions, an educational website
competition. The educational website competition is designed to recognize
achievements in the development of web-based education by students and
professors. Instructional websites corresponding to electrical and computer
engineering courses or programs can be registered for the contest.
The student hardware competition is entitled "Knight Mine". Each team must
use their autonomous vehicle to successfully turn off lights located at the four
corners of the playing surface. In the process, they must avoid mines located
on the playing surface. An infra-red emitter and visible light bulb will be
located at each corner. Eight mines will be located on the playing surface in
fixed locations. One additional mine will be randomly placed at the beginning
of each round. Each mine may be detonated only once.
The IEEE Student Activities Committee (SAC) is currently conducting the
"IEEE World Wide Student Branch Website Contest". Each of the 10 IEEE regions
worldwide recently conducted a Student Branch Website Contest and the top three
regional entries were submitted to a SAC Judging panel. These thirty entries
will be judged and receive the following awards: 5 Gold Award Winners at $200
each, 10 Silver Award Winners at $100 each, and 15 Bronze Award Winners at $50
each. The judging criteria are content, links/e-mail addresses, originality,
ALT tags, graphics, appeal, and load time. The three student branch finalists
selected from the fifteen which competed in Region 3 have been determined and
will be recognized at the Southeastcon ‘98 Awards Luncheon.
