Haynes Subject: Central Virginia Report It has been a very interesting year for the Central Virginia Section. In June 1998, Sean Haynes was re-elected Chair, Osama Hassan was elected Vice Chair, and Joe Berman was elected Secretary/Treasurer. In September 1998, the we sent Osama Hassan and Hari Narasimhamurty to the PACE Conference in Pheonix as our PACE and GOLD representatives. In November 1998, Osama Hassan was shot to death by robbers at his job. His loss was very difficult for his family in Egypt, his friends in Charlottesville, and his friends and collegues in IEEE. He is sorely missed. The suspects of this brutal crime have been arrested and are awaiting trial. I have personally been following the case by attending all the hearings involved. Indictments on 1st degree murder have been handed on 3 suspects. Despite lagging volunteer support, we have held a very successful slate of programs throughout the past year. Last spring we rented some vans and took a field trip to the NRAO Observatory in Greenbank, WV. We had Dr. John Reinert come and give a talk to our section. We had a tour of the Lynchburg Emergency Communications Center organized by a past section chair. We are currently in the process of nominating officers for next year. We have nominated Joe Berman for Chair, and Harold Pickett for Secretary/Treasurer. I have been contacted some other members who are interested in serving on committees. Our webpage transfer to EWH went very well. We continue to use the web page and e-mail, as well as our paper newsletter to reach our membership. We have a large group retired members who do not have internet access, so switching to an all electronic medium would be infesible at this time. The IEEE database leaves something to be desired when it comes to accuracy of information. We have about a 25-30% invalid data rate on our database. Hopefully with web renewal and membership update the rate of invalid data will decrease. Sam Harris continues to work on the State Legislative Liason project. He has generated a list of IEEE members along with their legislative districts. He has delivered this information to all Sections in Virginia. Our hope is to match up each legislator with one IEEE member who can be used as a source of information on technology issues. We have made arrangements to send representatives to SoutheastCON, the Professional Development Conference, and Sections Congress this year. Our section reporting was submitted to Piscataway in time to receive the 10% bonus. -- +--------------------------------+---------------------------+ | Sean A. R.
