As "Sullie" (W. L. Sullivan) says in " A HISTORY OF IEEE-REGION 3": " SoutheastCon continues to be the glue that holds it all together in Region 3." Early in the history of Region 3, it became our mission to hold a region wide conference that combined the needs of students, the professional member, and the IEEE regional leadership in a single meeting, symposium, or conference. "The first Regional Conference that combined all of these elements was held in Charlottesville, VA in April, 1971. At Charlottesville there was a Technical Conference, the Student Prize Paper Contest, a Student Conference, the Region 3 Committee and Executive Committee meetings, a workshop for Section officers, and an Awards Banquet highlighted by the presentation of the first Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award. Total registration was 320. Twenty-four of the thirty-nine Sections and twenty Student Branches were represented. The next year, the 1972 Regional Conference was held in Knoxville." The conference in Knoxville was the first to officially use the terminology "SoutheastCon". As we gather to hold our 28th SoutheastCon in Lexington, I urge each of you to take advantage of the many opportunities that have been provided to learn about IEEE, your region, your profession, and your future. Don Hill and his '99 SoutheastCon Conference Committee has worked hard over the last two or more years to put together an outstanding conference which brings Electrical and Computer Engineering professionals, faculty and students together to share information through technical sessions, tutorials, and exhibits. In addition, the regional leadership will meet for two days and transact IEEE business. During these meetings the Section and PACE Chairs are provided with information that is not available in any other region. Attend your Region 3 conference and learn why Region 3 is the one region that others try to emulate. . Richard L. Riddle IEEE Region 3 Director-Elect Reply to: r.riddle@ieee.org
