All sections finally have a full quota of officers, following elections in Hampton Roads section. Major meeting speaker topics include "The coming Revolution in Flight" by IEEE fellow Cary Spitzer, the latest updates on "Wavelets", "Medical/ Biological Treatments using Magnetic Fields", "Fault tolerant Computing", "Internet Service Providers" and "Minimization of Power supply Harmonics". Engineers week was supported and participated in by all elements in all areas of the council. Ralph Russell was happy to inform council of full funding by IEEE RAB of the Jamboree. All funds have been transferred to the region treasury. PACE p;planned projects include Social Security strengthening, Pension portability, Health care improvements, permanent extension of tax exclusion of employer provided education assistance., tracking and reporting on engineer supply and demand, continued visibility to problems older professionals seeking life-long careers and development with Educational Activities committees of opportunities for continuing education through distance learning. Our public relations director has continued his supervision of tutoring high school and middle school students in math, and plans to conduct a summer workshop on public relations. all levels of leadership are attempting to conduct more electronic messaging and conferencing, but are hampered by lack of e-mail addresses by some members. All sections plan to attend SOUTHEASTCON . The project of matching each state legislator with an IEEE member in his district is well under way, despite the delay caused by the death of Jim Strother. The Virginia Coordinating Council which includes the Virginia council and the Northern Virginia Section of Region 2 is seeking a new president to replace the late Jim Strother. The Virginia Coalition for Science and Technology Education has been reactivated under the direction of Debbie Murray and Ken Chapman. Virginia Council is a member.
