Officers: Chairman: David Livingston, VWCC Vice Chairman: Edward Wheeler, VMI Secretary/Treasurer: Andrew Stevenson, GE Section Meetings: We have had very interesting meetings including joint meetings with the American Chemical Society and ASHRAE. Meeting topics have been varied including "Transgenic Livestock as Bioreactors for Complex Medicines," "Data vs. Automation," "Rapid Prototyping," and "Harmonics from PWM Converters." Our "Spouse's Meeting" featured Mr. John O. Marsh, Jr., former Secretary of the Army with a presentation entitled: "Ethical Considerations: New Requirements and Recent Trends." A tour of Litton Poly-Scientific in Blacksburg, Va. is scheduled for the May meeting. Student Activities: The VMS is trying something new with the Student Papers Contest in the April meeting. Instead of having formal presentations, we are having a poster session. The new format and increased award moneys is an effort to increase participation which has been lacking. Section Business: The VMS Executive Committee has met five times this year. We converted to the concentration account at the beginning of the academic year. The record keeping is good but slow; it takes about 6 weeks for checks to clear, etc. There was a major glitch at the start: approximately $5K was credited to another section's account. This problem has been fixed! Our section meeting reports and financial report were submitted on time. The VMS will be celebrating it's 50 year anniversary during the September, 1999 meeting. We have invited and have received affirmative replies from Dale Caston, Region 3 Director; Paul Kostek, IEEE-USA President; and Ken Laker, 1999 President. We are in the process of planning an appropriate celebration. Awards: Outstanding Service Awards have been presented to: Usha Varshney for serving as Program Chair in 1997-98; Russell Churchill and Ira Jacobs for serving as General Chair and Vice Chair of SoutheastCon '97; David Livingston for serving as Section Chair 1997-98 and 1998-99, and Local Arrangements Chair, SoutheastCon '97; and Dan Jackson for reasons too many to mention. Respectfully submitted, David L. Livingston Chairman, Virginia Mountain Section --- David L. Livingston, Ph.D., P.E. d.livingston@ieee.org or d.livingston@roava.net or dlivingston@vw.cc.va.us
