"Chip" Dawson, MCP CPIM Section Chair IEEE Central North Carolina Section 6112 Auburndale Drive Greensboro, North Carolina 27410-4902 RE: Section Chair Closing Report to Dale Caston, Region 3 Director Dale, As I reflect on the past 2 ½ years as the Section Chair of the IEEE Central North Carolina Section I know I could not have had a successful term of office with out the support of the sections Past Section Chairs: Herman Heyge, David Macchiarolo and Marvin Neiditz. These past chairs not only provided much needed advice but filled in key committee chair positions. When we had the elections for section officers in 1997, I had a full slate of section officers. This quickly changed with the Section Secretary being transferred out of the area. He was working on transferal of section records when he left the area. The past Section Secretary was out of work on Maternity leave and was not able to help us with the sections administration. The secretary's leaving was followed by the exit of the Vice Chair transferal and the treasurer's decision not to renew his IEEE membership. In the first 4 months of activity in the section I lost all the major officers of the section. I was fortunate that the past section chairs stepped forward to help run the section. With the elections in 1998 I had two motivated section members to fill the key positions of the section, Secretary and Treasurer. We were not successful in finding some one for the Vice Chair position and left it open to be filled in the future. With the first 3 months of the 1998-1999 section meeting with out a candidate for the Vice-Chair position we held a special election and realigned our officers to move Bill Hennen from Secretary to Vice-Chair and Carl Hamilton from Treasurer to Secretary/Treasurer (combine position allowed under our section bylaws). With our elections this fall Bill Hennen is stepping up to the Section Chair position. Bill is well qualified to fill the position. He attended SouthEastCon 99 and Sections Congress 99 with me. He has a lot of good ideas for the section. Sections Accomplishments: 1. Held 9 to 10 meetings each year 1997, 1998 and 1999 on various technical and professional topics as well as business meetings for the section. 2. We updated our Section Bylaws to run on a calendar year as opposed to an academic year. This included making the bylaws read more politically correct with the change in reference from Chairman to Chair. 3. We hosted with the Winston-Salem Section the North Carolina Symposium and Exposition in 1997 for the North Carolina Council. The Symposium was on wireless communications. 4. We hosted the North Carolina Symposium and Exposition in 1999 for the North Carolina Council. The Symposium was on Software Agents and Electronic Commerce. 5. We will be hosting the North Carolina Symposium and Exposition in the year 2000. We are planning the event to be a Professional Activities Conference. We have communicated with the IEEE Engineering Management and the IEEE Professional Communications Societies each has expressed interest in participation in the event. The proposed time frame for the Symposium is September 18 to 23, 2000. 6. We have awarded student scholarship each year in the fall 2 - 1997, 3 - 1998 and 3 -1999 to students at North Carolina A&T State University. 7. We support Student Chapter at North Carolina A&T State University through joint meeting at various times in the school year. Members of our executive committee try to attend at least one student meeting during the year. 8. We have formed a Computer Society Chapter in the Section. The society has had 2 technical meeting since the formation of the chapter. Chip Dawson is serving as the Computer Society Chair. 9. The section is active in the Piedmont Council of Engineering and Technical Societies (PCETS). PCETS is a local organization made up of 13 different professional engineering and technical societies. PCETS annually puts on a National Engineering Week Banquet. For National Engineering Week 2000 the IEEE Central North Carolina Section will be the host for the banquet speaker, Dr. John A. N. Lee from Virginia Tech and a tutorial on ethics and the computer. 10. Recently the student chapter at Guilford Technical Community College has reactivated after several years of inactivity. The students are planning on entering a robot at SouthEastCon 2000. 11. We have submitted 7 individuals and 3 alternates for the IEEE Millennium Medals. 12. The section has successfully submitted 7 individual for elevation to Senior Member. In conclusion, the past 2 1/2 years as the Section Chair of the IEEE Central North Carolina Section has been an educational and rewarding experience. I am looking forward to the next few years working on the North Carolina Council and the Region 3 Leadership Development Committee. Sincerely, C. T. "Chip" Dawson, MCP CPIM
