From KReedT@aol.com Thu Jan 20 01:36:50 2000 Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 17:45:50 EST From: KReedT@aol.com To: r3-excom2000@ieee.org Cc: KReedT@aol.com, r.thompson@ieee.org Subject: Report to Excom: Leadership Development Committee Report to Region 3 Executive Committee by the Leadership Development Committee The Leadership Development Committee conducted a Section Officers workshop during SoutheastCon '99 in Lexington, KY in April with good attendance and results and participated in the North Carolina expanded workshop for Area 2 (NC Council) Section Officers at Asheville in November. A presentation of the Region 3 training plan and techniques was the subject of one of the workshops at the Sections' Congress '99 in Minneapolis, MN in October. At the Sections' Congress the Chair also attended workshops about training in other Regions and gathered ideas to improve the training program in Region 3. Chip Dawson, Central North Carolina Section, has volunteered to develop web pages representing the Region 3 training program that will be available through the IEEE entity web hosting site. This development is just beginning but, at completion, the material will be available to all Region volunteers as a reference or as a self study asset as well as a vehicle for presenting the material in person to groups of Section Officers. Now that most Region 3 Sections have converted to the calendar year for their fiscal year, it no longer appears desirable to present the Region 3 training program at SoutheastCon because that is too late in the Section Officers' terms. In the future we will concentrate on conducting workshops in the individual Areas just prior to or just after the Section fiscal year begins. The NC workshop mentioned above fit this time plan. To facilitate the new time plan for workshop presentations, we desire to have a training coordinator in every Area/Council who can present the training workshops. Members of the LDC committee currently include representatives of Area 1 (Virginia Council), Area 2 (NC Council), Area 3 (Georgia), Area 4 (Florida Council), Area 7 (SC Council). The Chairs of Area 5 (TN Council), Area 6 (Alabama, Mississippi), Area 8 (Kentucky) and Area 9 (Jamaica) are requested to nominate training coordinators for their Areas. Committee members are: Area 1, Dan Jackson, d.jackson@ieee.org Area 2, Chip Dawson, chip_dawson@gilbarco.com Area 2, Charles Lord, c.j.lord@ieee.org Area 3, Vernon Powers, v.powers@ieee.org Area 4, Jim Beall, j.beall@ieee.org Area 7, Reed Thompson, Chair, r.thompson@ieee.org The Goals and Objectives for Leadership Development for 2000 are as follows: Goal: Improve Section leadership effectiveness Objectives: a. Revise the Region 3 training program for Section and Chapter officers to include management and leadership skills as well as resources available at the Institute, Region and Area/Council levels. (SC '99 #3) b. As a result of most Sections changing to the calendar year for their fiscal year, present the Region 3 training programs in the fall or early winter seasons near the start of the Section and Chapter officer's terms. De-emphasize the Region 3 training program at SoutheastCon because that is too late in the officers' terms. c. Develop a new training manual and presentation aids to support the training workshops for the Area/Councils. (SC '99 #3) d. Develop a training Coordinator in each Area/Council who will present the Region 3 training workshops as required in their Area/Council. Hold a training retreat to train these Coordinators. e. Hold a Region 3 training workshop in every Area/Council at least once each year. f. Develop a new Region 3 training program specifically for Section Treasurers. Determine whether this treasurer training can be successfully done by self study or whether a training workshop is necessary. Best regards, K. Reed Thompson, Chair Leadership Development Committee
