From walcott@engr.uky.edu Thu Jan 27 09:46:16 2000 Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 10:45:53 -0500 From: Bruce L. Walcott To: Region 3 Excom Cc: David Green Subject: RSAC Committee Excomm Report Student Activities Committee Excomm Report (1/00) First order of business is to thank our outgoing RSAC chair (and my mentor), Dr. Pat Donohue. Pat has left quite a substantial legacy. Under his guidance, Region 3 has flourished in terms of student participation in Southeastcon, Leadership Workshops, etc. Thanks, Pat for these past 4 years! The next order of business is to thank our outgoing Region 3 Student Representative, Ms. Joey Duvall. Joey has been our RSR for the past 3 years and has agreed to stay on until a suitable replacement can be found. I have collected 2 resumes so far from interested students. The ideal student profile is a student who has been very active in IEEE (perhaps, involved in Southeastcon) and is contemplating going on to graduate school somewhere in Region 3. As you may knowm this year's Southeastcon will be in beautiful Nashville, Tennessee Apri 7-9 2000. This year, our conference is co-sponsored by hard-working volunteers at Tennessee State, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee Tech. Dr. Jeffrey Austten jausten@tntech.edu is the student program chair and Mr. Bryon Young bly2778@tntech.edu is ably heading the hardware competition responsibilities. The theme for this year's hardware competition is the Y2K bug. In addition to the traditional paper contest and hardware competition, the students have hinted at other competitions to come. More information on the student activities can be found at: https://www.tntech.edu/www/life/orgs/ieee/secon/intro.html In terms of Leadership workshops, there were 3 held this past year: Oct. 2 Bowling Green, KY Oct. 30 Birmingham, AL Nov. 13 Daytona, FL Thanks to Dave Green and Al Helfrick for their help this past year in putting these together! I hope to add one more for the northeast part of Region 3 this coming Fall and perhaps accelerate the schedule to allow more time for student branch execution of their plans. Goals for Y2000: -Fill Vacant Vice Chair Position (I have spoken to Dr. Stacy Wilson about accepting this responsibility and she has agreed to perform the duties of Vice Chair for a year) -Fill RSR Position (this should not be a difficulty as two outstanding candidates have already expressed interest) -Re-energize Student Paper Contest (perhaps propose relaxation of rules such that students who were undergrads during the fall semester could be eligible) -Promote awareness of GOLD and PACE among constituents Upcoming Deadlines: January 31: Deadline for Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Activities Award (see: https://www.ieee.org/membership/students/awards/sc_wilson.html ) February 15: Deadline for entries into the Student Paper contest (see: https://www.tntech.edu/www/life/orgs/ieee/secon/paper.html ) -Bruce L.
