IN MEMORIAM: VALDEMAR BODIN, PE Valdemar Bodin. PE, respected and beloved by all, died March 13, 2000 at Johnson-Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA at age 70, after an 11 month battle with cancer. Val was born April 8, 1929 to Janie Agnes Carter Bodin and the late Erik Bodin. At an early age he became a member of Pisgah Baptist Church in Rice, five miles from the larger town of Farmville, VA. Valdemar has held many engineering and management positions during a Bell Systems career that spanned the years 1945 to 1983. He took some time out to obtain his BSEE from Virginia Tech in 1949, served in the, Army and worked several years in the blossoming TV broadcast industry. After taking early retirement from the Bell system, he worked as a consultant with the Electrical Distributors Company of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, and as an associate of Payne-Lendman, Inc, (now Lendman Associate), an executive out-placemenmt firm in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He later became a Senior Engineer with the Virginia Department of Information Technology, which administers the state's sizeable telecommunications network.. After retiring from the state of Virginia, he went into private practice with John T. Moore Associates, a Richmond consulting firm. Val was very active in IEEE Region 3 and served on the United States Activities Board (USAB) in 1982. In 1984 he was chair of the Government Procurement and Regulations Committee under USAB's Career Activities Council. He was the Region's Government Activities Coordinator, serving on the State Government Activities Committee and worked with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' state government operation as IEEE liaison. His awards include the (first) Virginia Council Service Award, the Region 3 Professional Activities Award, Region 3 Service Award, the USAB Citation of Honor, and the IEEE Centennial Medal. Along the way he served as IEEE Richmond Section chair, IEEE Virginia Council chair and general chair of IEEE SOUTHEASTCON `86 in Richmond. He was very active in the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers (VSPE), NSPE and also active in numerous clubs and organizations. He was a faithful member of Pisgah Baptist Church in Rice, Virginia. He was also Past Master of Manchester Masonic Lodge #14, Past High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter 48, and a Shriner in the ACCA Temple. Val was also a member of he Manchester Moose Family Center 699, where he played in the country-western band. Val is survived by his mother Mrs Janie Agnes Carter Bodin of Farmville, his daughter , Mrs Tyra Bowman of Rice, Virginia and two grand children, Amber and Riley III. The funeral was held at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville on March 16 with internment at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, VA. Mrs Bowman has stated that contributions in memory of Val may be made to the American Cancer Society, 729 Thimble Shoals Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606.
