From k4pzt@usit.net Sat Apr 1 09:09:48 2000 Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 03:41:45 -0500 From: David L. Bower To: David Green-IEEE Cc: Brian Swail Subject: Tennessee Council Report The Tennessee Council is planning to meet briefly (on an informal basis) with section representatives at Southeastcon in Nashville. Each section has been sent notification by e-mail concerning this plan. Typically, the Tennessee Council has its primary (annual) meeting in late summer or fall of each year. The officers and committee people are:   David Bower, Chair Jim Duke, Vice Chair Secretary-Treasurer: Philip Lim Newsletter Editor: Kathy Drevik Pace Representative: Allan Long   There are several initiatives planned for the Tennessee Council as indicated below:   1. Publish a Tennessee Council Newsletter 2 or 3 times per year. Distribution would be to the section officers. It would also be available for others (electronically) on the Web Page for the Tennessee Council. The purpose of the newsletter would be (primarily) to share information among the section officers about activities and to provide information about programs presented at section meetings. It is hoped that successful program topics can be used by other sections. A program speaker at one section could be shared with another section.   2. Encourage TN sections to meet with another TN section on an occasional basis to promote interaction among the sections, and to help increase attendance. Encourage TN sections to meet with other professional societies (i.e. non-IEEE societies) when a program topic of common interest is to be presented.     3. Further develop the Tennessee Council Web Page, and provide links to the various TN section newsletters that are available electronically. Encourage sections that do not have a Web Page, to develop such a page.   4. Promote PACE activities through the TN Council.   5. Encourage TN Council officers to visit other sections. Work with any section experiencing difficulties.   6. Represent the IEEE TN sections at Tennessee's Technology Conference Board meetings. Last year, Tennessee's Technology Conference and Summit met jointly. Eight different technical sessions were organized and sponsored by the East Tennessee and oak Ridge sections. IEEE President Lake attended the event and participated in activities. At a previous conference, IEEE President Alexander attended.   7. Encourage more members within the TN Council to get Internet connectivity. One method being explored by the East Tennessee and Oak Ridge sections (as a PACE activity) is to make available (by individual choice) a discounted access charge for IEEE members with a local ISP.   When Oak Ridge celebrated its 50th anniversary in February, Dick Riddle (Region 3 Director) attended and made a formal presentation to Martin Hunt, Oak Ridge Section Chair. A picture was made of this presentation and submitted to the Region 3 Newsletter Editor for possible use.   Submitted by: David Bower, TN Council Chair
