From Chris.Siegl@fairchildsemi.com Sat Apr 1 09:08:20 2000 Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 01:18:58 -0500 From: Chris Siegl To: Region3 2000 ExCom , Region 3 Section Chairs Cc: Charles Lord , David Green Subject: Report of Activities of IEEE Eastern NC Section Report of Activities of IEEE Eastern NC Section The past year has been a transition year for us with formation of the EMC chapter, and all chapters having completed at least the required meetings. We launched the IEEE Eastern NC Section Engineers in the Schools Grant Program This program is designed to fund efforts of engineers assisting teachers in their classrooms. Grants up to $100 per project are granted after a review process of an application from an engineer and teacher team. Our section has budgeted $2000 for this effort this year. The application is located at: https://rtpnet.org/ieee/eweek/grant.htm We have a number of challenges including finding appropriate meeting space, getting the desired level of participation and difficulty in reviving the subsections. Recently we had greatly expanded Engineers week activities with some school visits as well as a Mall exhibit featuring hands on activities, which drew good crowds. Many of the students from visited classes brought their families to the Mall to show off what they had learned. For pictures see our Eweek page at: https://rtpnet.org/ieee/eweek/ We had a lot of fun and received many compliments. We are already planning a bigger, better splash for next year. We are also about to petition for an Engineering Management Society Chapter. We are also very pleased to have three members from our section named as Fellows: Philip E. Garron, Dow Chemical Research, Research Triangle Park NC Robert Michael Kolbas, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Franc Edward Noel, IBM Corporation, Durham, NC We are planning a recognition event for our new fellows and our Millennium Medal recipients. New elected officers in the Section are as follows: Section Chairman: Chris Siegl siegl@ieee.org Section Vice Chairman: David Ruden d.ruden@ieee.org Secretary: William Atherton willathe@us.ibm.com Treasurer: Maya Purrington maya.purrington@ericsson.com Regards, Chris Siegl Section Chairman IEEE Eastern NC Section siegl@ieee.org 919-362-0053
