Oak Ridge and East Tennessee Sections

The Oak Ridge and East Tennessee sections have been ramping up to normal operations over the past several months. The sections completed 99 with several technical meetings, participation in Sections Congress '99, and involvement in the regional "Tennessee Technology Summit." The technical meetings featured a tutorial and demonstration of the LabView graphical programming environment  (National Instruments) and a tour of the world headquarters of Internet Pictures Corporation (iPIX). Four members from the sections attended and participated in Sections Congress '99. The delegates participated in training and policy setting caucuses. East TN PACE chair David Bower and OR Chair Kathy Drevik played a large role in the organization of the technical sessions and sponsored eight sessions during the Technology Summit.

After a brief lull in activity last Fall and transition to new officers, the sections have resumed monthly technical meetings and educational activities. The Oak Ridge section celebrated it's 50th anniversary in February with Dick Riddle, Region 3 Director, presenting a banner to commemorate the event. Dr. Steve Kercel of Oak Ridge National Lab presented an interesting discussion on "Entangled Behavior in Bizarre Systems." The following month the sections learned about the Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) and Intacs techniques for improving vision. This presentation was made by a MSEE turned MD - Dr. Marc Bodenheimer. Finally, the sections are supporting the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair (SASEF) with general judging and special awards in the electrical engineering area.
