From cbcobb@rosser-sav.com Fri Mar 31 16:25:08 2000 Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 16:54:43 -0500 From: Charles Cobb Reply-To: Charles Cobb To: Region3 2000 ExCom , Region 3 Section Chairs Cc: Kim Newman Subject: Fw: Section Report Report of Section Activities to IEEE Savannah Section This past year has met with may changes in the section. We have changed our bylaws to move officer elections from fisical year end to calendar year. Our education committee is taking a more pro-active stance with the local school board in an effort to improve the exposure of the pre-college students to the engineering profession. We expect to provide mentors to the school science programs and students in the fall, coordination of this effort will be headed up in the Savannah, GA, area by Kimberly E. Newman, Ph.D., and by Emil Sagan in the Hilton Head, SC, area. We have experienced a great increase in college level student participation at our monthly meetings. In the fall of 1999, the Engineering Technology students from Savannah State University began attending, requiring the meetings be moved into a larger room. However, due to class and lab conflicts, the SSU students have been unable to attend during the spring meetings. A new regional engineering program, started by Georgia Tech, has provided some students interested in attending Section meetings throughout the spring. New elected officers in the Section are as follows: Section Chairman: Charles Cobb cbcobb@ieee.org Section Vice Chairman: Joe Buxton jbuxton@frontiernet.net Secretary / Treasurer: Matt Conner, P.E. mfconner@southernco.com See comments following below. New voluntary Chairs: PACE Chairman - Hesham Shaalan, Professor of Engineering Technology, Georgia Southern University. Educational Activities, Savannah Area: Kimberley E. Newman, Ph.D. kim.newman@gtrep.gatech.edu It is with great regret that I announce the departure of two of our most respected and valued members from the Savannah Section. Chuck Izard and Clyde Hardin are moving to other areas and will be leaveing in the early summer. Chuck has served as the Secretary / Treasurer for a number of years and his experience keeping the books and keeping the other Chairs in line wi ll be greatly missed. Clyde is leaving us after many years of service in almost every position available in the Section. Clyde is currently serving as our Awards Chairman and heads up the Educational Activities for the Savannah area. We wish them the best.
