TENNESSEE COUNCIL REPORT Submitted by David Bower (TN Council Chair) d.bower@ieee.org New and existing officer information for the various Tennessee Sections has been received, updated, and forwarded to Brian Swail to post on the TN Council Web page. In addition, the information has been forwarded to Tracy Hawkins at Headquarters for updating. Form L50 reporting was completed by the Tennessee Council Treasurer (Philip Lim), and was submitted to IEEE in Piscataway, NJ. The new officers for the Memphis Section are Marlin Gines (Chair), Michael Daley (Vice Chair), Allan Long (Secretary) and Philip Lim (Treasurer). The Power Engineering Society, Computer Society and EMBS are also active in the Memphis area. The section was involved in Judging activities, according to member David Russomanno, for the Memphis/Shelby County Science Fair Projects, and went to the schools to personally present the awards. The Memphis Section EMBS Society sponsored and organized a workshop last year with the University of Tennessee EMBS Student Club. New Nashville Section Chair Andy Dozier (Vanderbilt University) was actively involved in co-hosting a symposium on Network Security at Vanderbilt University this past March. Other Nashville Section officers are Chris Finen (Vice Chair), and Bruce Mackie (Secretary-Treasurer). The section has also been active in supporting the initiative for a new Tennessee Engineering Center. Nashville Section member Bill Sims has been very active in this effort. Middle TN Chair Bobby Smith reports lack of activity in their section. The Middle TN Secretary/Treasurer is Philip Medley. One idea being discussed is possible joint meetings with the Nashville Section (because of its proximity) to provide support. Activity regarding the Tri-Cities Section in upper East Tennessee is really growing. Secretary Ralph Young reports five great meetings last year with good attendance, and five more programs organized for 2001. The new Chair is High Blanton, the Vice Chair is John Shaneyfelt and Paul Lebhardt is the Treasurer. At their January 2001 meeting, a program on Internet Connectivity was presented; with 21 in attendance. JR Siever (Bechtel) travelled from Houston, TX to present the November 2000 meeting on "Load Flow and Short Circuit Calculations." Because of their proximity, the East Tennessee and Oak Ridge sections have many joint meetings; including Excoms. A joint meeting for April is being planned regarding new developments in terrestrial and satellite RF wireless technologies; to be presented by Larry Perry. East Tennessee Section Chair Al Akerman is volunteering to judge in the annual Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville this spring. Other East Tennessee officers are David Bower (Acting Vice Chair), Mark Allen (Secretary/Treasurer) and David Bower (PACE Chair). The Oak Ridge Section officers are Brian Swail (Chair), and Martin Bauer (Secretary/Treasurer). Chattanooga Section Chair Craig McClure reports good activity in their section, with several meetings being held including those by the Power Engineering Society and the Computer Society. The Computer Society organized a meeting titled "Cable Is Just Not For TV Any More," and was presented by Comcast Communications. Dr. Joseph Kizza (from the University of TN at Chattanooga) presented a program to the Student Chapter on "Internet Ethics and Privacy Issues" in January. Other Chattanooga officers are Clifton Johnson (Vice Chair), Lorie Conley (Secretary), and DeJim Lowe (Treasurer).
