IEEE CENTRAL GEORGIA SECTION March 15, 2001 PO BOX 836 WARNER ROBINS, GA 31099 SECTION REPORT TO REGION 3 Officers CHAIR Greg Taylor VICE CHAIR Curtis Lee TREASURER Cliff Menchew SECRETARY Al Richardson MEMBERS Dennis Ludwig AT LARGE Dan Bishop Clayton Paul Rick Noel Section Meetings The first meeting for calendar year 2001 for the Central Georgia IEEE Section was held on February 20. Larry Porter from the Southern Company spoke on Electrical Power and Southern Energy Spin-offs. Section officers for calendar year 2001 were introduced. The second meeting for 2001 will be March 26, with Dr. Clayton Paul, IEEE Fellow speaking on Electromagnetic Compatibility, a subject of considerable importance to members of our Section involved in defense avionics. Executive Committee Meetings The first Executive Committee meeting this year was held March 14, 2001. Programs for the remainder of the year were discussed, with each executive committee member taking responsibility for one or more Section meetings - soliciting and coordinating with the speaker for those meetings. The Executive Committee members will continue their practice of each contacting at least two members prior to each Section meeting. The Executive Committee members will contact the 41 members of the total 318 membership, who are in arrears, stressing that our members are important and encouraging them to renew their membership and to attend the upcoming meeting March 26. Student Section The student section at Mercer University has become much more active through the efforts of Dr. Clayton Paul, IEEE Student Branch counselor. Since Dr. Paul's appointment last fall, the Student Section has taken several plant trips to local industries. In addition, fifteen student members are planning to attend the Southeast Conference in Clemson, SC this year. Goals and Objectives The Section purchased Microsoft Publisher to expedite preparation of the newsletter preceding each meeting Section meeting. This software is expected to eliminate the tedium accompanying the use of Microsoft Word to prepare the newsletter, and possibly obviate the use of a profession printer for the final production of the newsletter each month. A second copy of this software may be purchased in the future for posting of the monthly newsletter to and maintenance of the Section website. The Section has sponsored a Future Scientists and Engineers of America (FSEA) after-school program at Russell Elementary School in Warner Robins, Georgia for the past three years. FSEA gives students an opportunity to experience real engineering and science with projects that challenge student teams to creatively solve problems. This program has been very well received, with participation increasing from 50 students in previous years to 100 students this year. Four teachers at the school and six engineers from local industry oversee the program. The Section is soliciting a co-sponsor for next year to share the $1500.00 per year cost for this program. The Student Section has expressed an interest in having an IEEE Picnic toward the end of the school year. This could coincide with an existing objective of the (professional) Section to host a barbecue with spouses in attendance as one of our regular Section meetings.
