To: Region 3 EXCOM From: Wilfred A. Roberts, Region 3 Area 9 Chair Subject: Jamaica Section Report for Clemson2001 IEEE JAMAICA SECTION To: r3-excom2001@ieee.org SoutheastCon2001 Subject: IEEE Jamaica Section Report for Clemson Date: March 11, 2001 Introduction The year 2001 has commenced with a positive start for the IEEE Jamaica Section. The Officers and the EXCOM of the IEEE Jamaica Section and the Jamaica Chapter of COMSOC are in place and our initial planning meetings are = behind us. Membership Although our membership has grown by 18% we are not satisfied with the attendance at our monthly meetings. We continue to plan stimulating presentations, which hopefully will improve our monthly meetings attendance. Sectional Activities - 2001 January's meeting took the form of a Retreat where a yearlong programme of activities was planned. In February, a representative from Digicel Limited presented the topic Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). In March, Network Security will be presented by a representative from Computers and Control Jamaica Ltd. In addition, the Section will participate in the University of Technology, Jamaica open day activities. In April, University students will make a presentation. A public forum on wireless communication is being planned for June 2001. Other monthly activities are planned but are yet to be confirmed. Jamaica Chapter of COMSOC's Activities - The chapter held its planning meeting and has outlined its activities for the year. A major activity will be a Distinguished Lecture Tour (DLT), which is scheduled for May. Student Activities - University of Technology Chapter The chapter has elected its EXCOM and has planned activities for the year. The IEEE Jamaica Section made a presentation for the most Outstanding Student project in March 2001. The award included a perpetual plaque and paid membership to IEEE for the first year as a full member. The chapter has entered the Paper, T-Shirt, and Robot Competitions. We are hoping to have six students attend SoutheastCon2001. E-Conference Meetings On January 20, 2001 the IEEE Jamaica section EXCOM joined Region 3 EXCOM at the National Water Commission=92s office and participated in our second E-Conference Meeting. It is also our intention to participate in the next Region 3 EXCOM E-Conference Meeting on March 22, 2001.
